Can't believe it. James Brown is dead. I'm not surprised, but that sucks. He performed not too long ago at the Hollywood Bowl. He was terrible, but he won't be remembered for that.



I'm glad he toured Japan. I'm sure he had a bunch of fans there.

RIP JB. You were one of a kind. We'll miss ya.

I saw James Brown in Minneapolis in 1972, he was the opening act for Johnny & Edgar Winter (with Rick Derringer too). Unfortunately, Brown's opening act is still at the top of my list of Worst Performances I've Ever Seen. But it wasn't Brown's fault, the whole act was ruined by a showboating contrabass saxophonist who overpowered the whole band with his excessively loud honking, what a shame.
OTOH the Winter brothers was one of the best gigs I ever saw. I stayed in town the next night and caught a second concert with Uriah Heep. Oh those were the days, all those performers were at their peak.

It's a shame that all the great old musicians are dying off. Today's generation of alleged musicians don't do much more than sample and remix the old sounds. Soon all the old guys will be gone and there will be nobody making new sounds to sample, everyone will be sick of the constant remixed sounds they've heard for years, and there won't be any new music worth sampling and remixing. Maybe then, a new generation of musicians will try to develop their talent by playing real instruments and using their own voices.

I had this exact argument with my Uncle. I dunno if he agreed with me but I concluded that he had just involved his life in other things *ie making a family/career* and had turned away from searching. Charles, If you really want to find good music you gots to go underground. Take to your television with a chainsaw, find the hard to tune into local radio stations (if they have them where you are) and have a look at whats there. There is SHITLOADS of great musicians making excellent music today, you just gotta make the effort to find them.

All the same, Im totally jealous of you being able to get along to all those great gigs when ppl like the JB were in their prime. I guess the difference with their time was that good musicians still were able to become mainstream. Nowadays the masses have so much information to deal with that they can only handle bullshit remixes and very simple jingoish tunes.

Well, that's the thing.. regardless of their success at the time, acts like James Brown have stood the test of time, now they're icons. Who today will stand the test of time? I just don't see anyone who will hold up like that. I don't even know of anyone from the last decade or two who could become icons. In another decade or so people willl still listen to Classic Rock but we'll laugh at the popular music of this decade.

It shows you never had a real artistic bone in your body. I'm sure you don't even know what The Screwed Up Click is.

If wealth and fame is the measure of "success" that you deem most important in a musician/artist then *in most cases* you are setting yourself up for dissapointment If you appreciate music of any real substance. If you remove the "are they filthy rich and does everyone know them" filter, you will unlock HuuuuuGe amounts of music that will just make ya wanna get up anda screeeeeeam.

I already have tickets for Deerhoof on 1-20 here in Shinjuku at The Loft.

If you've seen them before and liked them then I'm sure you'll have a good time. I saw them in Loft a while back and was disappointed. They followed Afrirampo who got the crowd geared up with a full-blooded show but Deerhoof were underwhelming by comparison. Perhaps my expectations were too high because they are indie darlings in the US and I'd heard only good things about them.

Wasn't that the night we saw Deerhoof at the Troubadour? Yeah, it was. And Deerhoof was NOT terrible and they totally smoked the sold-out Troubadour.

You are right Rob, it was a killer show. And now that I've gathered a few buddies, like Pete, I'm heading out and seeing the little bands again. Pete's new band, "Evil Maria" just played at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood. Good times, man.

The El Rey is much like the Great American Music Hall in SF. Great sound, older theater, not too huge. I saw Yo La Tengo and Superchunk for a free "party" for the "Mr. Show" fellows. I can't remember how I got into that show, but I do remember it was one of the all time greats.

Speaking of staying fresh over the test of time, how long has Yo La been around? 20 years? I think I played 'em when I was in college. I just checked. They've been around for 20 years and released 15 albums. How's that for staying power?

Superchunk recorded 13 albums in 13 years. They've not played together for a long while, though.

I'm gonna focus on new bands for awhile. The scene in Silverlake is still going strong.

Just go to SpaceLand on any given night and you'll get an earfull of all the lastest indie rock.

Same with Seattle - remember Warehouse and Wrex? SF Purple Onion? NoLa Mermaid lounge? Now I prefer NoKo Punk from the heartland of Shin Ookubo.

Brown died December 25 in an Atlanta hospital. His body remains in a sealed, gold casket in an undisclosed location awaiting a decision on where to bury it, said Charles Reid, manager of the C.A. Reid Funeral Home in Augusta, Georgia, which handled Brown's funeral.
