Strange J-breakfast question

Postby Mr Doricar » Wed Jan 03, 2007 10:32 am

Hey all,

Last time I was at Fuji Speedway I stayed in a small hotel in Gotemba and had a quite unusual breakfast. I have only stayed in larger hotels before and the breakfast was usual style euro buffet type affair.

Anyway in Gotemba I had scrambled eggs, toast, then them some strange things that were really gorgeous. One was similar looking to beansprouts but dark coloured and greasy but very sweet. Any ideas what that is? I've googled stuff like "Japanese breakfast" but not found anything that looks similar

Can you help?

various slimy Japanese breakfast items

I doubt I"m on the right track here since these don't look like beansprouts to me. But I think they might match the rest of your description.

But just to take a stab in the dark... was it mekabu or mozuku?

I've thought about it again and maybe beansprouts was the wrong was to describe it. I would say that it look as if it was cut from something larger. The pieces were almost like very thin french fries in shape and the texture was more like....Pork that you would find in a chow mein! This is really bizarre I know!!! :confused:

Could've been 'gobo' or burdock root.

I always ask what it is before eating anything.
I'm still wondering why they always suggest that I "eat the tacky mouse" at each meal!

Remember: When cooking gobo, you MUST soak the burdock pieces first and then throw away the water. Otherwise, it will taste like lye drain cleaner. Despite that sweet taste of Kinpira Gobo there's only about 100 calories of sugar in the typical Japanese recipe ( 1 tbsp sugar + 1 1/2 tbsp mirin) and 10,000 zillion times the daily requirement for fiber.
See the Japanese recipe below.

Kinpira Gobo Recipe - Japanese Recipe

From Setsuko Yoshizuka's "Your Guide to Japanese Cuisine"

Kinpira gobo
is braised burdock.
Japanese Vegetable Recipes

INGREDIENTS:

* 1/2 pound gobo (burdock root)
* 1/4 pound carrot
* 1 tbsp soysauce
* 1 tbsp sugar
* 1 1/2 tbsp mirin
* 1/2 sake
* 1 tsp sesame seeds
* 2 tsps vegetable oil

PREPARATION:
Peel the burdock and shred it into very thin strips. Soak the burdock strips in water for a while and drain well. Peel the carrot and cut it into short and thin strips. Put vegetable oil in a frying pan and put it on high heat. Add burdock strips and fry for a couple minutes. Add carrot strips in the pan and fry for a minute. Add all seasonings in the pan and stir well. Turn off the heat.

Whenever I eat gobo, my system gets a good refresh... same goes with koyadofu.

It really gives the old internal plumbing a good scrub. Feels like someone took a bottle of Lion Cleanser to my innards. :D

For a thorough cleansing, "konnyaku" has them all beat.
It just takes a bit of getting used to.

What would happen if you ate daikon and gobo at the same time? A reenactment of Mt. Saint Helens?

Success

Postby Mr Doricar » Sat Jan 06, 2007 12:59 am

Was in London today and went to China town on the hunt for some burdock root. Was just about to give up when I saw it in the freezer section in a packet sliced, ready to go with carot. Went a bit mad and bought restaurant sized bottles of mirin, soy sauce, sesame oil and some other random stuff. Found Pocari Sweat too which I miss. K-Pocari though! You won't beleive how much they charge for a can of coffee! £1.45 for the typical Y120 cans! Ouch

Cooked it just now! LUSH

Fried it in mix of veg. oil and sesame oil for about 4 minutes with a bit of sugar, bit of soy sauce then served it in a bowl with some cayenne pepper sprinkled all over it. Man it's gorgeous!

It's not quite the same when you look out of the window and see sheep and fog though! hehe I miss Japan boooo hoooo :inlove:
