Iwao Takamoto passed away today. Takamoto is best known for his design work at Hanna-Barbera during the 1960s. He designed Scooby Doo, the Jetsons' dog Astro, and Penelope Pitstop. He entered the business after World War II, where he was hired as an assistant animator by Walt Disney Studios...more...

Farewell to a King

Postby Hokgwai » Sun Jan 14, 2007 3:12 am

I remember watching the old 1970's HB cartoons as a kid back in the day and watching the credits and I'd see all these "Ameri-centric" names would all over the place and then "Iwao Takamoto" would always POP OUT at me out of all those names.

I remember always being like, "Iwao Takamoto"?? Who the hell is that guy and what does he do??

Thanks for the memories of many hours sitting in front of the TV eating cereal and watching some of TV's best works of animation.

(PS For all those animation cineastes out there mind what's going on. We are losing great modern animation kings like him everyday.....it's a shame the average consumer who watches these properties have no idea who first breathed life into their favorite characters...)

From the article I read in the Birmingham News, Takamoto also worked as a production assistant on Disney features like Cinderella and Snow White. I remember Tezuka was inspired by Disney so if Takamoto was working at Disney at the time Tezuka was watching Disney films, it starts an odd sort of spiral..
A Japanese working on Disney films who are watched by another Japanese who is inspired to create comics influenced by Disney.... so does this mean Takamoto is Tezuka's indirect godfather?.....
