Japan issues tsunami warning
6:53 a.m. EST, November 15, 2006
TOKYO, Japan (AP) --
Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.1 hit the Kuril islands north of Japan.
The quake struck about 390 kilometers east of the Etorofu islands north of Japan at 1115 GMT Wednesday, according to the agency.
A tsunami of about 2 meters (6.5 feet) or more could hit the Pacific coast of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 1210 GMT, the agency said.
The agency told residents along Japan's Pacific coast to flee to higher ground.

Japanese meteorologists say a tsunami of at least two metres (6.5 feet) high could hit Hokkaido and Honshu islands after 2110 (1210 GMT).

Warnings are being broadcast on all Japanese TV and radio stations advising people to move to higher ground.

They've got us on Tsunami Advisory here on the california coast, too. We'll definitely have to head for higher ground if it's coming because, well, here's the situation:

It's no joke. I saw a video of about 20 people swept out to sea in a 6" tsunami. They were stupid, they went right up on the beach to see it come in. It sucked the ground right out from under them, and before they knew it, the outflow pulled them into the ocean and onto some rocks. Some of them got killed.

Tsunami warnings follow quake that jolts Pacific Ocean
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/04/01/quake.reut/index.html
Tsunami warnings have been issued following a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 jolted the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, Japanese media reported.

Kyodo news agency said there was a possibility of tsunami in the Pacific Ocean after the earthquake which occurred near the Solomon Islands at 5:40 a.m. (2040 GMT) Japan time.

Japan's Meteorological Agency is looking into the possibility of tidal waves hitting the Japanese archipelago after the quake, Japanese media said...

I just read that not only have villages "been destroyed and homes, ripped from the land, are floating out to sea", but that the Solomon Islands' Tsunami has hit . . . Taro Island.

. . . Authorities on Taro Island, the main centre in Choiseul Province in the country's west, have described the "strangely frightening" behaviour of the sea as the tsunami rolled in.

Provincial Premier Jackson Kiloe said the sea was sucked away from the shore before huge rolling waves swept in.

Parts of the coastal sea bed were left dry and exposed as the water was pulled out before the wall of water rushed ashore . . . more

I know that people have been killed and homes destroyed, but Taro-san, how long have you had this tropical island, and when were you going to tell us about it?

The TV is flashing that all reporting points in Japan were hit by a devastating 20cm tsunami.

I guess I don't know everything I know about Tsunami's! Just how big is a 20cm Tsunami and how do they measure it? Do they Pops standing by himself out in the surf with a media stick, or what?
