Beckham is the Buddha

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Oct 10, 2006 6:06 pm

David Beckham is a God
AFP/Tonight.co.za. October 9, 2006
David Beckham is a God, according to his wife Victoria. The former Spice Girl claims her Real Madrid footballer spouse is worshippedlike a deity in Japan and there is even a temple where his followers got to pray to him.
Victoria told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "There is a temple there where the Japanese go to pray to a statue of David. I know it sounds crazy but it's true."...
....On the island of Awajishima, in western Japan, a bronze statue of thefootballer has been erected...Japan is not the only Far Eastern country that 'worships' David. At the Wat Pariwas Buddhist temple in Thailand a golden statue of the former Manchester United player....more....

NOTE: If this report is true, the "temple" (Buddhist) is more likely to be a just a commerial good-luck shrine (Shinto). However, the Thai temple's Beckham Buddha is true and was reported on by the BBC.

Beckham Buddha moving to LA

Postby canman » Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:26 pm

Oh the poor J-league. They really thought they had a chance to land Beckham. Not for the money LA ponied up, wow $250 million. Where did MLS get that kind of money anyway. I guess we will soon get our fill of MLS on Japanese TV. Victoria must be happy, she will finally be able to set foot in Hollywood.

I read that the $250 million is not his salary but estimated earning potential from salary and endorsements. His total salary is supposedly around $7 or $8 million per.

I read that, too. It's kind of like when the Cosmos hired Pele. In the long run, that didn't work. However, if they can tap deeply into the Korean as well as the Mexican market, the Galaxy could rival the Dodgers in the LA market. After looking through their roster, I wonder why they didn't invest in a hot young Mexican (pant) and a hard-bodied Korean stud (cute little dicks, AO!) instead of some washed-up honkey.

The days of the old NASL? I think the Cosmos had Pele, Beckenbauer, and Georgio Chinaglia(spelling?) at about the same time. (But maybe Chinaglia wasn't such a great player.

Did you see NASL games? Do you remember the 35 yard(meter?) offside line and the hockey-style penalty shots where the players dribbled in from that line to shoot?

I think there was a rule that the teams had to have at least three North American players on the team, or on the field.

Yes. And I haven't thought about that for a long time and at the time I didn't realize it wasn't standard. You've tapped into a weird little subsection of my memory bank with that one. Nice work. I love when people bring up weird shit like that.

If you remember that you should try and check out the movie Once in a Lifetime:The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos, released last year in the States. There's also a book, but I don't know for sure which was based on which.

Can I try some more? How about the MISL(Major Indoor Soccer League) that kind of carried on when the NASL fizzled out? Some of the NASL teams had teams in the MISL, too.
Played on an ice-less ice rink with some hockey-like rules: free substitution, penalty box, and even some goalies with helmets. (I think Shep Messing wore one.) But if this were still around I guess it wouldn't be any surprise.

I wish both MLS and Indoor had more teams.

I predict two Koreans and two Mexicans make the squad.
