Koreans just think every story has to say 'All Koreans are good. Korea never did anything bad.' but history just isn't that simple. You don't have to have to go to Harvard to realize that a Japanese person living in Korea toward the end of the war was up shit creek. A thinking Korean would assume the kids would ask why.

I've been to Korea eight or nine times in my life and everytime there are massive protests happening somewhere about something.
I stopped telling the Koreans that my wife was Japanese, it ain't worth it.
"Naw, my wife's American."

If Koreans did some bad things to the Japanese, which I think they might indeed have done after the war just as the Russians did not spare any Japanese in their territory, then the stories should be told. If the sensitivity of some fucking Korean is ruffled then so be it. Without Japan Korea would be nothing today. Can't stand bastards that bite the hand that feeds them. That goes for China too.

One problem with the censorship attempt is that many people have to read the books to judge whether or not to ban them. Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

Care to elaborate? Without the Japanese market Korea would not be where it is today. Now I'm saying this from gut feel as opposed to relying on hard facts. I'm willing to be flexible on this thought.

I thought you talking about Japan building up Korea's infrastructure during occupation. But as for the economies feeding off of each other or Korea feeding off Japan or whatever, I don't think South Korea's move into modernization has been any kind of improvement. I wish they were like another Bhutan, instead. Something interesting, you know, instead of getting stuck in the same old money worshipping soul destroying capitalist routine most of the world is in.

The same can be said of Japan. The Korean war is what really kickstarted Japan's economy.

I was trying to do a little research on this woman and her family history (father), but couldn't find squat.

Is that name Kawashawa just made up or what? (google "kawashawa -yoko" gets zero real hits)

After further digging, her real (former?) name seems to be Kawashima.., maybe...

To be clear, it does say Kawashima on the cover of the actual book. The Kawashawa moniker may just be a mistake of the reporter, or a mistake at Amazon.com.

Yeah I've no doubt the Koreans did some nasty shit at the end of the war, but they learnt from the best, learnt from some of the most depraved J-bastards the world has ever known, and it was Tokyo that started this shit not some kankokujin

Without the Chink's booming market Japan's stagnant economy would implode, and with China's historical culture the Nipponese would be still grunting...making ape noises while running around naked and throwing spears at the wildlife trying to catch their latest meal.

Do not be too emotional about a book

Postby jchun6784 » Sat Feb 24, 2007 5:33 am

Dear Korean/Japaness/Korean American/Japaness American,

I read the book recently and it reminds me of various things. The reason for enormous anger from Koreans about the book is coming from historical facts.

500 years ago, Japan invaded Korea killing 3 million innocent people. At that time, they took most of korean treasures/books/useful peoples.

90 years ago, Japan colonized Korea/part of China (manchuria). Numerous innocent peoples were killed by Japaness. Even they made experiment with live human being( called unit 731).

Based on this sad history, Korean and Chiness did not like Japaness/Japan.

The difference between german and Japan is that german governmant/people regret their wrong doings and appolgized with heart but on the other hands, Japan did not even they try to hide their wrong doings. That makes Korean/Chiness angry.

Back to the book,

In my view, if I am not biased to any side or just American who did no know the long hatered history, I will say the book is Ok to read and give some space for thought like good book.

If we know the history and the background of that time, we might think the contents of the book is absurd enough to throw it to the garbage can.

That is big difference.

As a reader,

The only problem we can pinpoint is the accuracy of her description for the claim of autobiography such as the bamboo groves at that coldest area, air-raid of american plane.....

As a american korean who knows the sad history, we should be systematic/organized/cool to reason the innocent readers not to read the book and expel the book from the shelf, especially from the list of recommended books from middle schooler.

Being emotional about this issue would not help anything.

Last but not least, if his father was a member of unit 731( in the book, there are some indication of that.), we should find that evidence.

Let's show our unified voice.

Jay
