Steven Seagal? Who's that?

Movies, TV, music, anime other random J-pop culture phenomenons. Also film/video production, technical discussion, cast and crew calls, etc.

Segal isn't even tuff - he got his ass kicked by a stuntman and is scarred shitless of the Italian Mob ( I'll forgive him for this because I'd also be fucking cocerned if the Mafia were after me)
Segal is one of these wanna-be Buddist brutes who lives in the fucking stone ages think we should all be primitive freaks and practice some crap chop-suey religi-osity,

Well its too fucking late for that shit the Chinese/Arabs came up with gunpowder, and the Europeans look the Asian ideas and invented the cannon, crossbow, pistol, rifle... et cetera and industrialized so there's no point in going back to the dark-ages now.
and thanks to the Americans and Russians we've now got nuke warfare.

Nobody in their right mind is going to disarm

I disagree with the shit that's going down in Iraq right now but as long as there is greed or war on earth and as long as there are ayatollah fuckers screaming death to America we will continue to need the best equipment to defend our selves...sadly for hippies the nuke weapons are here to stay END OF STORY

Why do you say that SJ? That was quite true in Judo and some of the other martial arts, for several reasons and really wasn't a particular gaijin vs. Japanese thing.

Age only has to do with the oriental view of it, if a person is going for an honorary degree or promotion. Kendo just happens to be one of the arts where you can continue successfuly competing at advanced ages.

The mistique about the Shodan, or first degree black belt in Judo for example is all western. Most J-people who are serious players will be a 1st degree by junior high school. The rank in Japan simply means you have progressed from beginner to a point where you ready to become a serious student. Other countries have made it a sort of a pinnacle that must be obtained and in the old days besides delaying promotions, just mail and admin processing took so long to get approval from the Kodokan to promote a person overseas This just simply added to repute of those FGs finally becoming shodans. Remember the J-people are doing this as exercise in gym class.

There were money hungry places, dojo's and the like, in the states that found it lucrative to promote a person slowly from rokkyu to gokyu to yonkyu and the great leap to Sankyu, where you could actually wear a brown belt! Mochiron, you paid a little promotion fee each for kyu, to supplement what you are already paying for your lessons.

In years past, it was not unusual to see judokas in the states quit competing after the big jump to Shodan. That was because of age and time required to get there. It is somewhat better now, but still behind the pace in Japan.

The normal FG shodan will massacre most J-shodans and nidans. This is because of that age and experience difference. They are way above the J-players. After shodan this gap quickly decreases and/or (usually) reverses.

This is because the Japanese normally don't become a serious Judo practitioner, or become competive until they have obtained sandan or yondan (yodan), so a shodan really is not much more than a schooled beginner here, but by the time they reach sandan they are regular motorcycles in a judogi.

Several years back, Uemura won the all Japan Judo Championship as a nidan, and it made tremendous news. Everybody was amazed and he became somewhat of a folk hero, but the truth of the matter was that he hadn't, or didn't bother to learn the simple kata's that were needed to get promoted. They down-played that big time in the judo circles because they didn't want reflecting on the character of "yawara". They instead insinuated that he had refused to accept promotion to a higher degree yet because he didn't feel that his "technique" was perfected enough.

So, the bottom-line is again, that it is we, the FG's ourselves, that have placed the shodan into a position high on the alter and the J-people actually find it curious, or even funny that we do this.

Legal Row Over Seagal Reality Show
24 August 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | WENN |
Steven Seagal is at the centre of a legal battle between rival TV bosses over a new reality show.
Bosses at production company The Idea Factory claim network chiefs at America's A&E network stole their idea to make a show about the action man's life.
They allege A&E executives went behind their backs, after dismissing suggestions for a series of shows - and signed a deal with Seagal.
One of the ideas pitched to the TV bosses was a show featuring Seagal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme all living together.....:smoking:

It pains me to report this, but it appears Seagal is attempting to pull a Mickey-Rourke-like comeback and by staring in a semi-legitimate movie.:roll3:
A&E press release - 10.20.09....Steven Seagal ... just finished shooting the new Robert Rodriguez film "Machete" which will hit theatres in 2010. Steven co-stars with Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo...more...

I wonder if he moved on to her Dark Territory after the cameras were gone.

-catone
-who's Steven Seagal? Why, he's an "old Japan lag," i.e., an expert on Japan by dint of the fact that he lived here years ago and sometimes drops by.
