Gukanjima - View of an Abandoned Island

"Off the westernmost coast of Japan, is an island called "Gunkanjima" that is hardly known even to the Japanese. Long ago, the island was nothing more than a small reef. Then in 1810, the chance discovery of coal drastically changed the fate of this reef. As reclamation began, people came to live here, and through coal mining the reef started to expand continuously. Before long, the reef had grown into an artificial island of one kilometer (three quarters of a mile) in perimeter, with a population of 5300. Eventually, the mines faced an end, and in 1974 the world's once most densely populated island become totally deserted. The island, after all its inhabitants departed leaving behind their belongings, became an empty shell of a city where all its people disappeared overnight, as if by some mysterious act of God.

GUNkanjima

GUNship Island aka GUNkanjima is owned by Mitsubishi and most likely they would drag off any squatters. Japanese would not live there anyway because it's too far away from other members of The Collective...too "scary."

Yomiuri Online: Preservation campaign turns forgotten Gunkanjima into tourist destination

Once the nation's most densely populated area, Gunkanjima in Nagasaki was largely forgotten until a nonprofit organization began a campaign to preserve the island, which was abandoned about 30 years ago after closure of its mine.

The renewed interest in the island prompted local governments, the tourism industry and other entities to jointly promote the island as a tourist attraction.

This installment of the Power of Tourism introduces the island as an industrial heritage site, symbolizing the country's modernization after the Meiji Restoration and rapid economic growth, as well as local efforts to preserve and promote the island, which is located 17.5 kilometers southwest of Nagasaki Port.

"Many of us were moved to tears when we landed on Gunkanjima for the first time in 25 years for our alumni meeting," said 50-year-old Doutoku Sakamoto, director of the NPO Gunkanjima o Sekaiisan ni Surukai, which aims to make the island a World Heritage Site. more...

Japan's deserted island

Postby Neo-Rio » Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:01 pm

Gukanjima is an island near the westernmost shore of Japan.

It is an island built upon a reef in the early 19th century because of a coal mine in the reefs and quickly became a densely populated island 1 km in diameter and 5300 people living packed together, working the mines. The island was complete with everything a city needs and people living on the island were very happy with their lives. In 1974, the mine has been emptied and people living in the island have deserted it, leaving everything behind, turning the island to a post-apocalyptic movie scene.

Today, entrance to the island is prohibited.

So why is it ilegal to enter the island?
Is it property of Mitsubishi Mining or something? Would the J-Coast Guard arrest you if you sailed out there?

If it weren't, the Koreans and Chinese would be sailing over and planting flags!

Chicoms and Koreans ain't as stupid like the J-media constantly portrays them, they wouldn't claim land where their legal claim would be virtually GROUNDLESS (Taiwan stands alongside Beijing and also supports the claim against Nippon ). Plus it would be a military commander's nightmare trying to hold onto a little rock that close to Japan if the shit really did hit the fan.

I wish it was made illegal back when I used to work in pubs, but Im glad partying isnt such a stinky affair anymore: at the mo its only us + a couple of Scandanavian countries - but Brussels are talking about a European-wide ban, the French & Spanish wont be happy about that. I hope they it dosent stretch to grass: i wont have any other reason to visit the Netherlands, no offence Tsuru but I just havent developed the necessary appreciation for Windmills and Clogs..

I love the 61 & 62 vids GJ.

No doubt wanting a more English-friendly name, Kinki Tourist have renamed themselves KuNT.

Abandoned 'Battleship Island' to reopen to public in Nagasak

Postby FG Lurker » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:48 am

Abandoned 'Battleship Island' to reopen to public in Nagasaki
The Mainichi Daily News, April 21, 2009
NAGASAKI -- The long abandoned "Battleship Island," once a bustling coal mining settlement, will be reopened to the general public here on Wednesday.

The island, the real name of which is Hashima, lies about 4.5 kilometers west of the Nagasaki peninsula, and is about 480 meters long from north to south, and a slim 160 meters wide. Coal mining began in earnest on the island around 1890, and it was dubbed "Gunkan-jima," or "Battleship Island," because the forest of apartment blocks that rise out of the narrow island give it the appearance of a warship.

[...]

Those wishing to visit the island should apply to the Nagasaki Municipal Government at 095-829-1152. Tickets are 150 yen for primary school-aged children, and 300 yen for those of junior high school age and older. The Yamasa Kaiun maritime transport company also conducts cruises to the island, including a trip ashore, out of Nagasaki harbor. Interested parties can contact the company at 095-822-5002.
