Asahi: Flagging condom use and rising HIV infection spur new campaign
...Domestic shipments of condoms have fallen from a peak of 684 million units in 1993 to just 422 million in 2004. Meanwhile, the number of newly reported HIV infections and AIDS patients hit a record 1,199 in 2005...Health experts are fighting back with a concerted campaign to encourage the use of condoms to prevent AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases....The campaign faces an uphill battle. In a 2000 poll by Japan's largest condom maker, Okamoto Industries Inc., many people said they found condoms "troublesome" and "distracting." Okamoto official Toshiaki Ishii, 57, said that at first he thought the decline in condom use was a result of the lifting of the ban on low-dose birth control pills in 1999. But use of the pill remains uncommon in Japan. Ishii now suspects the culprit may be what he calls the increasingly "sexless" lifestyle of young people, who are spending more time on the Internet or at karaoke bars and other dusk-till-dawn entertainment facilities. At the same time, says Ishii, young people are getting the wrong message from adult web sites and porn videos. "Condoms are rarely used" in the videos, he says. "As a result, young people might think that's what sex is like"...more...

Maybe the real cause of Japan's low birth rate; all the nihonjin are scared of sex because, according to the porn, once ya start humpin, your genitals get all blurry.

New HIV infections hit high in Japan Wed Feb 7, 9:04 AM ET

The numbers of new infections of HIV and AIDS patients in Japan hit record highs in 2006, the Health Ministry said Wednesday, underscoring concerns over spreading infections.

The number of new HIV infections last year was 914, up nearly 10 percent from 2005, according to preliminary data released by the ministry's AIDS Surveillance Committee.

The number of those who developed AIDS in 2006 was 390, up 6.3 percent from the year before.

Both numbers were a record high since the ministry began taking statistics in 1985.

The report did not provide analysis on why the numbers are increasing. Ministry official Kozo Akino said while actual infections may be spreading, the surge in the number of infections is also because more people are getting tested.

Christ, those numbers are low as Hell. I really think HIV transmission has something to do with nutrition. I mean, for the last 15 years young people in Japan have been bareback fucking like rabbits. It's incredible. There's something about AIDS that has not been explained, I don't care what anyone says. AIDS in Africa verses AIDS in Japan, it does not fucking add up.

Simple statistics.. don't be so complacent. Any increase in new infection numbers today means that if it is not checked and education regarding prevention is not widely provided or understood then expect the same sort of exponential increase and crisis in any population.

But that's already had time to happen. And it hasn't.

Massive heterosexual outbreaks of AIDS in the first world will never happen unless the virus mutates making it more contagious to those without already compromised immune systems. Fuck it. It's time to worry about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke

even herpes and warts

That's funny because Texas (definately not a liberal state) became the first state to make the HPV vaccine mandatory for girls.

The order applies to all 11- and 12-year-old girls unless their parents sign an affidavit opting out on religious or philosophical grounds. More than a dozen other states are considering similar legislation. Governor's rationale: The shots will save lives and money. Idealistic view: The governor stood up to activists who say the shots encourage premarital sex and usurp parental authority. Cynical view: He caved to drug-company lobbyists who are peddling the vaccine around the country to enrich its producer, Merck.

Requiring the HPV vaccine for school girls has been up for some heated debate in Washington DC as well, due to the fact that it was proposed by white members of the city council in a city where most of the public school children are black. Various parts of the black community have been upset about this....some view it as implied public insult about sexual behavior in the black community while some others just see it as yet another plot by the government against the black community to secretly sterilize or infect them with HIV.

But back to your original thought AK, I think people should be more worried about Hepatitis B and C...The estimated current annual body count from those two is only about 10-20% below that of AIDS in the US.

Whatever? I think it's very good news if just a bit ironic. And you are absolutely correct about that opposition from religious wackos. How lucky for Texans that the interests of the religious right and the interests of big business managed to cancel each other out.

ZakZak has a short article (Japanese) which raises a few interesting points although, disappointingly, few are substantiated. It looks at cases of new HIV infection and suggests that instances arising from intercourse, between a man and a woman, are in the minority. Urologist Dr Shinya Iwamuro is then quoted saying 1 in 20 Japanese men are MSM (men who have sex with men). Incidentally, Dr Iwamuro has a website and a YouTube video which deserves more than its current 400 views:

[YT]dThmCyxz5RA[/YT]

The article says that's where infections are on the rise. Although condoms offer good protection against HIV, their image in Japan is still primarily that of a contraceptive. Iwamuro says that sales of condoms have been declining but both abortions and STD infections also appear to be going down and he attributes this to sexless Japan. He says that the fact HIV infections are not also falling points to the majority cases occurring as a result of sex between men.

There were 1,021 new reports of HIV infection last year, not including AIDS cases. 904 resulted from sexual intercourse of which 694 were male-male. By age group, 76.3% of new infections among men between 20 and 34 were from same sex acts; 71.8% for 25-49 year olds; 52.3% for those over 50. Dr Iwamuro thinks the number of middle-aged Japanese men having sex with other men is on the increase. Such men may have married but the doctor thinks society's constraints grow weaker as they get older. He's concerned that men in this group may spread infection at home because they will have no good reason to use a condom, especially where their wives have gone through menopause. The doctor calls for more research and public education to prevent infection.

I think you're confusing "harpoon" and "poontang." I know killing and eating all those whales is really non-PC, but it's not gonna give you AIDS quite as easily as something like, say, unprotected sodomy, which for all their other faults I don't think the Japanese are practicing with humpbacks.

I'm keen to believe it, at least until shown otherwise. It's the same thing that happened in the US during the height of AIDS. There was a huge push to reinforce the idea that HIV was an equal opportunity killer, and straight partners, or lesbians, had an equal chance of transmitting the virus. Obviously this was never the case: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/msm/index.htm

On one hand, it was probably wise to discourage non-homosexual males from believing they were completely immune to the disease, but at the same time, disingenuous or misleading info is rarely propagated without some sort of backlash, and I can't help but feel that the misinformation did a disservice to gay men, who seemed to curb their risk-taking behavior no more than the general population.
