It's supposed to like suck toxins out of your body through the soles of your feet.

Even if it's BULLSHIT I think even the placebo might be good for me. Can placebos work if you suspect BULLSHIT?

Whichever. The point is - it isn't going to work if you doubt from the beginning.

What if you doubt if it's real but you don't doubt that you have just enough faith to make the placebo work?

The ones in the photo were at the 100 yen shop! I use them regularly but like how do you really know if it's working? They do turn brown but I mean there's something in the pad that turns brown I think. My wife says that brown stuff is 'poison' pulled from my body. I know my body is choc-a-bloc full of toxins so I really hope this is gonna save me.

Yes. But it's probably just the placebo.

I imagine most things (especially absorbent materials) WOULD turn brown if you put them in your shoes... from sweat and the oils from skin.

The difference is that you *wash* your socks, but not whatever those things are.

BTW, you can always tell something is BULLCRAP by the way they word certain things.

Red flags tend to include words words like:

"toxins" "energy" "ancient (usually chinese) wisdom" etc

without including works like

"FDA approved" (well, that doesn't really apply to Japan) (you can't get the approval of government organizations unless you can prove it does what you say it does)

And they also tend to rely on the word of "experts" such as holistic medicine experts, or random doctors (who are often not even medical doctors, or doctors at all)... rather than tests and experimentations.

Also, they *never* forget to give you a few overwhelmingly positive testimonials.

If you really want to know whether it's BS, try an experiment... have your wife (or someone else who's available) apply or not apply them without your knowledge (so that you don't know whether they're there are not...if you can see or feel them, replace them with something that's indistinguishable as a control).

Maybe I could get the World Health Organization to sponsor my experiment.

Why don't you mix up a pure saline solution and spill a few drops on the pad to see if they turn brown?

Although, I'm a firm believer in the benifits of the placebo effect, so you may want to just continue shelling out the 100yen and enjoy your new found vitality.

Wikipedia

"While germanium has been claimed as an attractive nutritional supply, able to cure cancer and AIDS, FDA research has concluded that the offered supplements "present potential human health hazard".[1]"

I believe they are referring to taking it orally, though. It's probably not so bad when applied to the soles of your feet.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

As one who grows germaniums, I can assure you that handling them won't kill you, but it ain't gonna cure you of that Friday night 26er of Scotch either.:)
