Nikkan Gendai via Japan Today: 'Power for Living' ad campaign piques curiosity, confusion
The ads, offering a free Christian inspirational book entitled “Power for Living,” [English link here] feature endorsements by such well known personalities as Olympic figure skating champion Janet Lynn, Nippon Ham Fighters manager Trey Hillman and pianist Saki Kubota. And they seem to be popping up everywhere these days. “We suppose the total outlays for the campaign exceed 1 billion yen,” an advertising agency source tells Nikkan Gendai. But that figure, the tabloid reports, is probably just a drop in the bucket as the assets of the organization offering the book, the West Palm Beach, Florida-based Arthur S DeMoss Foundation (founded in 1955) are said to exceed $400 million. Is the foundation some sort of religious cult? Apparently not. “The organization supports conservative Christian groups that oppose abortion and homosexuality and reject evolution,” says a U.S.-based journalist...The original book “Power for Living” appears to have been written by a Protestant minister as a “primer.” The Japanese-language edition also conveys to readers the Christian message that “God loves you.” Its contents also feature numerous testimonials by famous people...[A]n unnamed source tells Nikkan Gendai. “Distribution in Germany began from 2001, but commercials for it were banned due to restrictions on propagation of philosophical and religious material...In Japan, the TBS and Fuji networks declined to air the commercials...Apparently skepticism remains about the foundation’s motives”...more...

God Damn! Why so much hateful speach? I understand worrying about the fundies actions in America, where their message can more easily manipulate the christian ideology of American culture. But do you think this campaign really holds any threat of increasing the number of fundamentalist christians in Japan? It looks like half of the celebrity testimony they are promoting in Japan is from fucking gaijin, how well is that going to work?

Because these cunts are fucking cancer. They hate freedom and make it their missions to constantly interfere with other people's lives. They're just like fucking Muslims and the best thing about Japan is those dumbass Christian cunts are rooted in. Fuck them for trying to plant the fucking seed.

Haven't you heard? Evangelicals have had a strangle hold on Japan since 1995, especially in Akihabara.

Well, just to add a smidgen of 'balance', the Evangelicans would probably give back to the community..

I'm probably wrong, but I can't recall ever hearing a temple or shrine 'sponsor' a school in need or hand out clothing to the homeless. Seems like they're good at the 'obligatory' taking from the community, but there's not much quid pro quo..

Now the trade-off is you get cock-sucking hypocritical 'Christians' on meth condemning anyone publicly living the lifestyle they live in secret.. But the 'homeless' salaryman living large in Yoyogi will get his daily nikuman..

Religion is so complicated.. ;)

My buddhist sect is always raising money for disaster relief like Katrina, the Thailand tsunami, etc. and also has (nonreligious) educational development programs in the poorest nations of Africa, Asia, etc.

Buddhists, unlike christians, don't seek publicity for their charity.

I suspect he didn't see the obvious contradiction. But you don't have to read much about Buddhist beliefs and practices before you realise that chuckles' posts regularly oppose almost all of them.

I, for one, thank God for Christians.

Steve and Dixie King have served with OMS since January 2004. God has now called them to a full-time ministry in Japan. Steve will be working in maintenance on the Tokyo Biblical Seminary campus while Dixie will be serving as field treasurer, helping in friendship evangelism through English classes and assisting as a hostess [sic] for mission guests...Steve and Dixie have a clown ministry as Woody and Ornament, which they will be using as an outreach to share the Gospel to Japanese children.

I would worry more about those with trigger happy hate toward evangelicals, than evangelicals themselves.

Japan NEEDS Jesus. Period. You can rant/rave/disagree/cuss about it all you want, but that's where I stand.

I say put the message out and move on. Those that will accept it will. Those that won't will not. There is no "shoving it down throats" when it is done from a standpoint of love. It's living ones life in tune with what the Bible says.

I try to do it, but I don't always succeed. I'm getting better at it though.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

AO, I think I recall you saying a while back that you don't think Catholics are really Christians which would imply you have a very specific sense of what getting the word out means.

Yeah, those Nation of Islam guys with the bowties are always up to that shit. Thankfully, they leave whitey alone. I remember listening to them preaching in the streets of Manhatten back in the early 90's. They were saying 'We're gonna knock all these buildings down someday.' over a loudspeaker.

You know who else approaches me in the street to spread the word? Republicans, Democrats, Communists, Buddhists, Greenpeace, anti abortion activists, pro abortion activists, and Hare Krishnas. I've even been approached by an ultra Orthodox Jew once. The catch there is once they find out your aren't Jewish they move one. They are specifically looking for Jews who aren't religious or religious enough. Which by their definition is probably more 90% of the world's Jewish population.

Anyway, my point is what's the difference? I'll never understand why people get so worked up about Christians specifically. Maybe it's because most of us come from countries where the majority of people are Christian. Maybe if we were from a moderate Muslims country like Turkey people would bitch whenever you mentioned "evangelical" Muslims.

I don't have anything against Christians per se, but from my experience, having been involved with Christianity, and having known so many, I think you eventually come to the conclusion that many many Christians are damaged people. A far greater proportion than you might expect compared with the general population. Look at that Haggard guy, even if you knew nothing else about him, just looking at that cheek-splitting, joyless, hyper-smile of his and you know something is not right with him.
Turns out he was living as about 'on the edge' as you can get - drugs and smoking cock by night, preaching against those things by day.

I haven't actually seen (or haven't noticed) any of the commercials althought my students have. I don't know why they have chosen now to start this only Arthur D. Moss or whoever knows.

There are a few evangelical christians already in Japan and the few that I have meet are involved in their communities, doing charitable work, and living far less debauched lives than most members of FG. In essence, they are doing much to improve the reputation of foreigners in Japan even if their conversations are a bit too Jesusy for me.

I don't think that is unique to Christianity and any movement has it's fundamentalist douche bags. Just look at the assholes from Sea Shephard and ELF for example. They don't make me hate environmentalists.
