Fake Japanese Indie Band

Fujiya & Miyagi sound like a Japanese duo but they are actually three British blokes getting good reviews for their current release "Transparent Things".

"Fujiya & Miyagi readily admit their impostorship in a chorus on this album, as if the whole thing was a meticulous piss-take: "We were just pretending to be Japanese." True: Fujiya's a turntable company, and Miyagi's the filmic Okinawan played by Pat Morita...Fujiya & Miyagi presumably relish urban Japan's cultural gizmosis, the fixation with gadgetry and the attention to detail paid even on the level of toy eraser design. F&M's carefully constructed retro-futuristic electronica definitely suggests the quaint, boxy dawn of portable media."

Their site has some MP3s here. I know Pekochan isn't a record player but that's the image I had before finding out where their name really came from.

'We were just pretending to be Japanese' (Why?)

"We were just pretending to be Japanese," murmurs singer David Best. True enough, they're actually a trio from Brighton who owe their name to a turntable manufacturer and the wrinkly know-it-all from The Karate Kid....

WHY?

The only "Fujiya Turntable" I could find (Fujiya seems to be semi-dead or dead company).
