So it's a Chinese team vs a Japanese team at a Japanese venue. Hmmm, that's bound to be "fun."

December 3, 2006 started out with a friendly game between the Nikko Kobe Ice Bucks and Changchun Fuao as part of Asia League Ice Hockey... Then an old-time hockey brawl broke out ...Decent fight but who chose the background music?

This is one of the lamest hockey fights I have ever seen. I like how they formed little pockets that skated around as they all collectively tried to run from each other while simultaneously throwing sissy punches-- like they were trying to shoo away a cloud of bees.

And the guy on the video who keeps saying "This is not hockey!! I have never seen this in a game!!" doesn't know shit about hockey and is even lamer than that fight. MY balls are bigger than his. :P

Is what they meant. The kind of hockey that Gary Bettman wants for the NHL. He doesn't want any more fighting or hitting or any kind of physical contact.
We just wrapped up the Japan national hockey championships here in Hachinohe, and I must say that the level of hockey was pretty crappy. I spent a lot of time with the national team coach, a fellow Canadian and he said that everything from the chummy relationship between the players, and the refs really hurts the game. And this new league involving China is a joke. Their level of play is far lower than that of Japan, and so they hook and hold and try to frustrate the Japanese players into taking penalties, or starting fights.
The best game of the whole competition was between Toyo University and the Nippon Cranes. The university boys were just flying and hitting anything that moved. It forced the Cranes to play a high tempo physical game, the way hockey is supposed to be played.
A lot of players want to rules changed to allow more hitting in the corners and in front of the net, they saw the game is just to sanitized.

Hockey without hits or fights...? That'd be about as exciting to watch as American football, a game that never fails to put me to sleep.

I have to agree with Canman's comments. I played inline hockey for years in Central Japan, and little by little, the Japanese players dropped out and refused to practice/play against the North American players. Any checking, grabbing, stickwork, etc. was seen as foul play. It was a pure technical game. It'd be like the NBA with zero contact in the key, no hand checking the guards...maybe OK for children and young ladies, but...

The local players had good skills, but were upset by the slightest contact or trash talk. They even packed up and left once when an American and Canadian got into a mock fight. It was all in good fun, they came for beers with the group afterwards (the fighters), but the local boys just couldn't deal with the concept that hockey is a physical game not unlike lacrosse.

I am gonna kill some guys when I get back to japan. in 2008. I am gonna recurit some guys on my ship when it gets to Japan (CVN-73) and we are gonna clean up the hockey scene(sp) when we get there. I am 6'4" over 250 lbs(122kg for you foreginers{sp}) and I cna't wait to play. You'll see my big dumb ass on JFHV(Japans Funniest Home Videos) soon. I am so ready!!!!! Bring it on!!!!

This last one is funny because Bertuzzi says he's disgusted and the league has to do something about it and he made what was probably the worst cheap shot attack ever.

Just to add my two cents...
Someone gave my an Ice Bucks vs a Chinese-team-whose-name-I-don't-know video and I was pretty surprised by how much one of the Ice Buck defenseman got away with hacking at the back of the legs of a
Chinese forward. The call finally came when the guy got hit so hard he fell down. B
It was surprising that the defender got away with it so much and that the forward put up with it for so long.
But then again I haven't seen so many hockey games.
Some of those guys in the fight video were really getting ganged up on, which is a no-no in hockey isn't it?
