Postby Tommybar » Sat Feb 24, 2007 2:10 pm

The U.S. military base in Yokosuka has created policy which prohibits Status of Forces (SoFA) personnel from owning/working in establishments which its' primary buisness is selling of alchol. So the bar must go.

For more information, please PM me with questions.

Size: 66 tatami (customer area)
Avg. Monthly Sales: 1 million yen
Avg. Monthly costs: 600,000 yen

Is the rent not considered a cost then? So you are clearing a little better than 200k a month?

Rent is included in the cost. So it clears around 350,000-400,000 a month.

I'm not up for the bar, I'm afraid, but I am wondering whether that new policy is related to your friend's situation where the stroppy old Japanese drunk fell over and died and got him set up on a murder/manslaughter charge. I hope things have gone his way a bit more than when you last reported.

Actually, it is from that incident that has caused this other bar to become available.

My friend was finally allowed to get bail, but has a court date of March 22, so I should know more then.

Actually, I think all services have that off-duty restriction concerning working in or with places that serve booze in Japan. They are usually more lenient concerning civilian government employees. But, it just depends on the JAG who is there at the time and some of them (especially the new young ones) can be real assholes. The policy is of course, primarily aimed at wives working as hostesses and/or hookers in bars, but applies across the board to guys working as bartenders, waiters, etc. At one time, they wouldn't even approve wives working as waitresses in family restaurants because they sell beer and wine.

Usually, even if they do look the other way, they are forced to take some action when an incident occurs.

As maninjapan said, it sucks, but I'm sure you know that!
