The originals that are damaged with watermarks "might" be found at the Getty Images website.

I'm guessing those are heads from dogs that were killed for food. I sure hope they didn't chop up somebody's pets for a dang protest.

Looking at the picture, I had this weird vision that they all sat down for a nice meal of boshingtang (dog soup) and are now breakdancing in happiness over how delicious it was. :-|

The Hanja for b(p)oshin is "Protect" and "body". Tang is pure Korean for soup. It is served by someone who has suffered a bad, or unfortunate incident and given to their family, or friends to protect them for a similar misfortune. It goes very well with mayo and a young yoja.

I am no butcher, but I'd bet good money that those dogs were killed and heads carved off specifically for that protest, and that the cut was made in such a way specifically for that presentation on the ground. They probably even sketched it out first figuring in the correct head tilt to maxmize the photo's impact.

North Korea's had decades of practice organizing stunts like this in the South too. Dad was stationed there in the late 80s and said the protests are almost like clockwork, but one day made a wrong turn and found himself in the middle of a demonstration right as the tear gas hit... was able to cough and snot himself back to camp where the MPs at the gate just chuckled.
