A national hospital here failed to punish a doctor fined for child prostitution two years ago until Friday, because bosses feared that if he quit, it would adversely affect its medical service.

The local branch of the National Hospital Organization said it suspended Yoshimasa Fujita, 36, a doctor at Utano Hospital in Kyoto, from all duties for three months from Friday. The move follows the decision by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry to suspend him from medical service for three months on Wednesday, forcing the organization to follow suit.

In December 2004, Fujita paid 35,000 yen to a girl who was 14 years old at the time to have sex with him at a Kyoto hotel after meeting her through an online matchmaking site, NHO officials said.

He was slapped with 300,000 yen in fine in May 2005 for the crime. However, the hospital director merely reprimanded him and allowed him to keep his post.

"He was one of two doctors specializing in rheumatism. We feared that if he was punished and resigned from the hospital, it would adversely affect our patients. We regret our decision," an official of the organization branch said.
