7 NOVA teachers arrested for possessing cannabis, cocaine
Mainichi
Seven foreign teachers working at the NOVA English language conversation school have been arrested on suspicion of violating a law on illegal drugs and the Cannabis Control Law, police said Wednesday.

Police accuse the seven of possessing five bags containing a total of about 1.5 grams of powdered cocaine, and eight bags containing a total of about 8.2 grams of cannabis, on a street in Tokyo's Roppongi district on Nov. 19 last year.

Investigators said a 32-year-old American teacher who was arrested on the spot on the same day told police another NOVA teacher had made a request for the drugs. The 32-year-old said the drugs were purchased from a street dealer.

Six other suspects later surfaced, including a 35-year-old teacher from Canada who was working at the same classroom in Saitama Prefecture, police said. (Mainichi)

Nova's union got started after it announced it would test its teachers for drugs, following the bust of one of its teachers. They never actually tested, although it was in the contracts that they could or would.
It will be interesting to see how Nova reacts to this.

wait.. WAIT! ive got one..

okay. an american, a couple of canadians, and a couple of australians walk into a roppongi night club...

thats all i got. but, honestly the setup could just as well be the punchline.

but honestly, i cant believe they ratted on each other.. that is fucking lame. i dont mean to be insensitive to any members here, but if they ratted to japanese police 1)they are stupid and 2) they deserve what they get.

No, that isn't TFG.

And you know why they got busted?
Because a cop approached the guy with the gear and told him he wanted to do a body search on him. And, the idiot let him do it.

It is illegal to body search without tangible evidence.

He said maybe he would come back in two years. That's a long time!

I think he should come back sooner, like Thanksgiving or Christmas. He promised to send me postcards. Have a safe trip Cousin Errin.
She might see him much sooner... Or not for a very long time, depending on what they decide to do with him.

Between this and the other drug thread it really wonder about these people. I can understand teenagers and young people doing drugs in Japan because the judgement centers of their brain are not fully developed. But the guy in the story is 32 for fuck sakes!

Let me try to put the problem as succinctly as possible: Is the transitory experience of a buzz really worth the conquesence (albiet slight) of arrest, incarceration, deportation and life long criminal record? Add on the fact that marjiuana does tend to make people a little careless thus increasing the risk of getting caught.

Of course, for me I suspect it is going to be a wonderful short time fuck up for all English teachers not just NOVA.

I've meet people from 18 thru to their 50s (and a retired undercover bobby at that) who used here. Some were extremely discreet, others shockingly open about it. Some bought/used in public places. Even seen a Japanese bartender sell, and allow regulars to partake in his establishment. Users seem very unwilling to give it up, despite the risk. Even when they and their homes have been searched because of informants & other illegal activities. Very few seem to ever get scared straight.

What are NOVA teachers doing with that much money on them?

They should be paid in food and board. Anything more is just breeding false hopes of rising above their allotted station.

looks like a comment to me. if you really had no comment, why say anything at all, mate?

in any case, the two versions of the article i've read also mention americans and my fellow canuckistanis, so what gives?

i'm sure the editors of the newly published 外人犯罪裏ファイル―外人犯罪白書2007 are lamenting the fact that this sensational story broke too late for them to include it.

no mention of any japanese dealers or runners, so i guess the sale and acquisition of narcotics in japan represents one of the few industries that are fully foreign owned and operated? :P

Kyodo via Japan Today: Nigerian arrested for selling drugs to ex-Nova teacher
Police have arrested a Nigerian man on suspicion of selling illegal drugs to a teacher at a Nova Co English school in November as well as 10 others in connection with alleged illegal drug use in Tokyo's Roppongi entertainment district, police officials said. Andy Onu, a 37-year-old part-time worker, is suspected of selling 1.5 grams of cocaine and 8.2 grams of cannabis to Errin Valentine, 32, from the United States, for 125,000 yen on Nov 19 on a street in the Roppongi area. Valentine has already been arrested along with five other Nova English teachers for allegedly possessing cocaine and cannabis and has been indicted for violation of the Narcotics Control Law. Onu came to Japan nine years ago, married a Japanese woman and obtained permanent resident status in Japan. Onu admitted to the allegations, police said. They quoted the suspect as saying that a Nigerian friend of his originally procured the drugs. Meanwhile, police have also arrested 10 others on suspicion of using cocaine and cannabis in two locations in Roppongi after seizing illegal drugs there including 0.3 gram of cocaine and 0.06 gram of cannabis hidden in seat backs, they said.

In doing a quick calculation 0.06 grams is 2.1 one-thousandths of an ounce worth. What the hell? They would have needed tweezers and a microscope to find pick that up.

OK - I have just got home and have had a few too many reds with CSTaylor.. but something just doesn't add up here.

...suspected of selling 1.5 grams of cocaine and 8.2 grams of cannabis .... for 125,000 yen.....
<snip>
including 0.3 gram of cocaine and 0.06 gram of cannabis hidden in seat backs.

1. how is 1.5 grams of coke and 8.2 g of cannabis worth \125,000?
2. 0.3 of a gram of coke is the average stockbrokers sneeze worth.
3. 0.06 g of cannibis is a leaf.
4. What is a seat back? Seat back of a car or of a sofa? If a sofa it could be any flotsam falling out of any jokers pocket.

Interesting, with that little cannibis how would they test it for THC content? Otherwise he could just been rope bought from the hardware store and carried it in the backseat.

It only takes one leaf, no matter how small, to be declared grade A weed! If the J-lab tech, or Police tech can identify (only requires a low power microscope) the Cystolithic fibers on the bottom of the leaf, then it's Bingo! That is possession of funky smoke without a license and can earn you up to a max of six years in the slammer.

Obviously, a person is not going to get that kind of time on that little trace amount alone, but with any other offenses indicated (use thereof, a buddy involved which makes transfer, etc.,), it can definately result in a reduction of your available sunlight for a certain given period of time.

In a nutshell, it just ain't worth it over here. I don't care how many assholes say, "Don't worry man, it's cool!", they ain't seen the J-guest facilities for violators. The J-police don't give no sprouts on anything dope related, so why fight the fight when you ain't got to do it!

Well coke really sucks. I hate it. NO I LOVE IT GIVE ME MORE. No I hate it. NO I LOVE IT GIVE ME MORE MORE MORE. See that's the problem.

But the kind cannabis plant should not be outlawed in any country. It brings joy and relief to millions of people. Mostly for recreational use, but also for medicinal use. I would rather smoke a blunt than take a deadly aspirin. Aspirin put my brother in the hospital last year. True, he took too much, but he almost died from internal bleeding. No one has ever died from taking cannabis.

Of course, cannabis was totally legal to grow and smoke in Japan before the war. Then the McArthur fucked it all up. I say, if the Japanese want to become Japanese again so badly, then...

BRING BACK THE TAIMA BABY! Make Japan the HEMP capital of the world. And watch the second bubble rise again. :)

I will explain everything you need to know about coke, based on close observation of cokeheads I know who destroyed their lives. When you're doing coke, you really get into whatever you are doing. I mean, you really REALLY get into it. Unfortunately what you are doing at that moment happens to be: doing coke. It is a vicious circle.
