Yeah, I saw Y-Abe blowing his own trumpet about that in the diet this afternoon. It was sickening.
Especially as, they were dragging that ass hole Farm Minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka over the coals about charging 5,000,000 Yen for a one year water bill in an office with only a small sink and one tap. The water bill is paid for by the government anyway. Abe was grilled as to why he is protecting this guy when obviously he has made an extremely unbelieving claim of such a high water bill. Abe refused to comment other than saying the guy had explained himself enough.
Fuck, 5,000,000 Yen for one tap on a sink and no bath in the office and the guy has explained himself enough.

So enlighten us with your incredible wisdom and please, do tell us which you think is "the best country in the world".

Canada generally ranks pretty high on livability scales. I'm guessing it ranked high here because it's difficult for people to have hard feelings about a place they never hear anything about ;)

They should be proud. Quebec is a nice place. Good food, good booze, history and traditions of Canada are strong and deep. The PQ haven't helped much, but what can ya do. Man, where can I find some good poutine?!

The question in the survey is whether a particular country has a "positive or negative influence". This seems vague enough that a lot of respondents probably gave a rating with very different conceptions of what the question means. A country is likely to do well if it has a high cultural profile and low political profile and I think that description has come to fit Japan quite well over the years.

One of the points the questionnaire is relying on is that most people don't really have very informed views about a number of other countries outside the one they live in so it really is measuring an intangible "goodwill" or "ill-will" which gets formed in casual, almost unconscious, ways.

Hell yeah. Venezuelans just irk me. I don't know what it is about them. Maybe its that stupid Venezuelan flag they keep waving about wherever they go.

This poll is shit, my guess is the Brits are looked at in a negative view now that Blair looks like a moron next to Bush, and because GW Bush made such a balls of Iraq and let the Americans die during Katrina - people around the world have now got a very negative image of the USA and the greatness it once stood for (Lincoln, JFK, MLK's civil rights movement, inventions like the digital computer, exploration of space, bold electric guitar music, designing aircraft)
People are now starting to associate the US with corporate greed, captialism or messy wars like Iraq. I think most of the other nations have won this stupid poll by default, not because these nations are contibuting anything positive to the planet or the human race (examples of positive contributions to the planet may include, inventions like penicillin or the internal combustion engine, funding for AIDS prevention, the geneva convention....et cetera ). I can't think of many positive contributions either a nation like France or Japan have give this world in the last decade. Perhaps the people responding to this poll are fans of Pokemon or the Ménage à trois.

This poll is nothing more than just a popularity contest of what the average Joe Shmoe thinks about the world. Who gives a fuck? It is hard to believe that Japan has any influence on the rest of the world unless you are talking about all the Sony and Toyota-like companies' contribution to the rest. Other than that, Japan offers shit. US, on the bottom of the list, contributes more money and aid to all of those "positive" countries on the top of the list combined.

Actually, as a percentage of GDP the Japanese government gives more aid than any other country.

Just 2 Years ago the rightwing were banging the war drums about giving aid to these other nasty Foreigners or Asian countires, so they listened to ishihara and Japan stopped. But the Japanese quickly unfreezed delayed loans to China once they seen how much cash they were losing in the longterm.....The aid is given mostly in the form of loans, it makes Nippon money as the rest of the Asians had to pay this cash back with interest (which is a very good yen maker cos Nippon banks are still stuck on zero % interest).

I like how nearly 20% of the respondents had a mainly positive image of North Korea. Haha, WTF have they contributed to this world other than Kim Jong's flying harem of super sexy acrobat girlies? Well, I guess that's pretty cool, but still...

I suspect that the aid isn't in cash but is in rice that the Japanese government buys on the world market and then subsequently donates to other countries to keep foreign rice out of Nippon and keep the WTO off their back.
