[quote="Samurai_Jerk"]Are you sure you're an English teacher? ]I see canman's home country is Canada, but in Dutch we have the word "apart" which translates exactly as "a little unique". It makes perfect sense to me.

And yes SJ, "a little unique is not grammatically correct", but it is a common expression used in the Ottawa valley, where I hail from. Anyway neither of you answered my question.

canman wrote:I have a question for all of you rich old timers(read Gboothe).

As I mentioned somewhere here before, if it cost a nickel to go around the world, I couldn't get out of sight! But, I'll give you my opinion for whatever that's worth.
Last night my student took me out for dinner, and then we frequented a very famous snack bar in the city.

I assume your student was a J-guy who at least knew the place, so he should have been advising you.
the Mamma invited the two of us to go to Karaoke with her and the girl sitting beside me for the evening、]
This is not unusual and is used for two things, a chance for the girls to relax and enjoy themselves while not working (even if they're doing the same thing on the job) and also as a chance to negotiate for further fun and games if they so desire. If further things are mutually agreed upon (either for some more cash, or gratis), this is always considered more of a "personal" sukiai, because it was arranged outside of the Snack Bar and does not have the flavor of them acting like a hooker picking up johns in the bar. It is more common to have the invite to get something eat after the bar closes, but karaoke is not unusual.
At the karaoke bar my student and I paid for all of us, since I figured it was the gentlemanly thing to do.

This is hard to say without having been with you. Sometimes they will want to pay their part, or the well heeled mama may want show-off and foot the whole bill. Usually, you will pay most or all of it, for the honor (?) of their company.
Then the girl sitting next to me for close to 7 hours, asks me if she can give me a ride home. It was 3:00am, and pretty cold, so I accepted.

I would have asked for a ride on her at either home, but this time of the year in your neck of the woods, polar bears freeze at that time in the morning. If by ride, you mean in her car, that is also interesting, because it was her private self. I assume it was by taxi. Sometimes, the girls will leave with a guy, who they have ajudged to be a good customer and nice guy just to give the guy bragging rights with his friend, or friends that he was with at the bar, to make it look like he went home with her, or maybe to a love hotel. But the fact remains she has to have an interest to go that far.
Now my question is should I have given this girl some kind of tip or something, or was she just being friendly or what. I know that in many cases even after leaving the snack bar, the customer is expected to pick up the costs if they are doing anything with a worker.

Tips are not necessary and in that case should not have been given. If it was a taxi, you could have paid her taxi home, but nothing beyond that. When tips are given, it is usually by a guy who has taken all his understudies to a bar and by their sure numbers, require a lot of time from all the hostesses, keeping them away from other customers. Then that guy and him only, might give tips to each of the girls. Some big spenders or Yaks will lay money all over just for their image, but it is not usually required. This actually developed from the days when the girls major income was from the number of drinks they got from the various customers and if you monopolized her time, she couldn't keep shilling you for drinks and couldn't move to new customers for more drinks, so you were costing her money, which a tip would help defray.
Just wanted to know your input. I thanked her for the drive and she invited me back to the bar, and then gave me her private business card, but I don't think I will be going back as the place is as expensive as hell.

If it's her private card, she's definately interested and if you don't want to use it, send it to me! I'll float a loan from GG, who's got more money than than a pachinko parlor, and be right up there!

The girl gave me a drive home in her own car, and yes it was damn cold, so I was thankful of the ride. As for the card, perhaps I will keep it for a little longer!
AO the bar was called Kirara, which I'm sure you know, the mamma is doing so well she bought the entire building that the club is in.
Also my student has been frequenting the bar for more than 15 years, so I guess he and the momma have a history.
