Being-a-broad mentions that no matter what shape you're in, eventually, you're going to wind up feeling like an elephant in Japan
This comment is from one of your links. It really is telling you not to worry: every western girl seems to wind up feeling clumsy in Japan on occasion. If you've already settled for not being able to buy clothes and shoes then you won't face many more obstacles to living in Japan than a girl of average height.

If you are not confident in yourself you will feel out of place where ever you are. The fact is being foreign in Japan is enough of a reason to be looked at - Japan is a great place to be, just bring pletny of shoes and pants before you arrive.

At the end of the one section there is this:

"Lest all these tales scare prospective female expats into never getting on the plane, now's the time to talk about the advantages of being a gaijin woman in Japan:

* I received more Japanese hospitality and had more celebrity than I think gaijin men receive.

* I could get away with stuff Japanese women can't. Let's face it: if you're going to be seen as temporary, there's nothing wrong with taking some risks. I watched two of my managers verbally abuse a female sub-manager during meetings, but they never gave me any problems. Eventually she quit, got married and started a family, just as she was probably expected to do.

Let's face it: being a gaijin, especially a female gaijin, can be lonely and frustrating at times. But it's an adventure, and worth it, if only for the short term."

Now, I'm 6'9" and black. Talk about standing out. But I enjoyed my time in Japan. I really did. I learned to duck under doors very well.
If you enjoy an adventure, try Japan. On the other hand, if you are easily rattled and wish things would just go smoothlly, go for a visit , but don't stay.

Oyaji,
6'9"??? Damn! I'm only 6" and I've bruised my forehead from hitting so many doorways in Japan. At your height, it must have been hell.

Oh, and I have to say this: that tall gaijin girl on the blog link is cute (http://hinoai.livejournal.com). I know this is flame bait to all you FGs who hate anything but asian women or movie star Western women, but let me explain. Look through her site at the photos and look at all her fellow japan-based gaijin girl friends--yikes! Most of her friends are pretty hard on the eyes, no matter how forgiving. She, on the other hand, is a rare find in that she is actually not hideous and in fact attractive. The height thing? Love it. I'd do nihon calligraphy with her anytime. ;) Though I suspect, after reading through her blog, that she's looking to land some Nihonjin man meat.

To Umbrelladown,
If you really, really, really are truly and seriously okay with potentially long, extended dry spells, then YES! I'd say go for it! Personally, I think all women (regardless of race) can be hot and I've even dated a couple of gaijin women in japan, but the vast majority of gaijin men and Japanese men I know in Japan are generally not pursuing gaijin women. This can work for and against you. Thing is, everyone needs love. So, it's a pretty big deal if you hit 5 years and don't have a boyfriend (assuming you aren't a nun). Let me say something that might get me in trouble: I think Japan is much easier for a gaijin woman if she is a lesbian. Yes, I said it. I'm not going to write a 500 word essay on it, but my decade of experience with Japan tells me that lesbian gaijins have more fun and a more stable emotional life in Japan. Straight gaijin women? God love'em, but I don't know how they do it unless they get really lucky and happen to find someone not focused solely on asian women in Japan. This is FG, I was told to be honest.

Glad to find her blog. Seems interesting =)

She's cute, although I've had trouble finding these pictures of her gaijin friends you mention. "Melissa" looks just as cute too in my opinion, the blonde one looks a bit funny/ehh, and "Kyo-Chan" is overweight and matronly.

And no, no pictures of me yet in my first thread in which the topic includes judging people's appearances ;p My web presence is easy enough to find if one searches.

General admiration goes out to american oyaji, as well, for hauling his huge ass around Japan ;) ;p.
I'm quite up for the adventure someday, as I always have been a huge Japanophile (the realist kind).

*semi-off topic*
As far as dry spells go, if most of your friends that you used to hang with moved out of your town, you lived in a relatively inaka town in Maryland and you happen to work in a major department store in the mall in the women's clothing dept, (where the only men you will see all day are shopping for/being dragged along by the women in their lives,) you will know the meaning of dry spell, hehe. It's quite terrible.
Damn, I need to get back to school/move out of here (to another city in the USA, soonish, I mean) like I always said I was going to do.

And I never said that I didn't find east-asian men attractive, ;) hahaha

Well, that would eliminate me from consideration, unless the FG is a goat herder! Then maybe we could communicate!

To Umbrelladown,

If AO did it, I'm sure you can. After all, he's got 11 inches more than you (I mean he's 11 inches taller) and, if you read his posts, you'll see that he can still be a bit of a girl sometimes. (Just kidding, AO ;) )

Don't let some internet blurb put you off experiencing the country for yourself.

I was going to throw that question back atcha, but then I read this...

Ah, but then again, I'm a slut

That's the exception I didn't put in because I didn't want to piss off any feministas, but sillygirl is right, if you can slut it up, then you'll never have a very long dry spell.

So, uh, sillygirl... whatcha doing next weekend hot mama? ;)

Just do it

Postby D. » Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:20 am

Umbrelladown, you sound like you have your head on straight so go for it. Japan's a lot of fun. It can be tough to be a minority, but it can also bring some perspective on the world. One word of warning though, be prepared for comments that may be, a little blunt, tactless, odd, etc., regarding your weight, height, hair color (including whether cuffs and collars match), and a whole bunch of other subjects. In my experience, the questions are usually not asked in malice, just simple curiosity.
