Free Narita-Akihabara-Shinjuku Tourist Shuttle Bus

H.I.S Experience Japan, a new subsidiary of travel agent H.I.S, have announced they are introducing a shuttle bus service between Narita Airport and Akihabara/Shinjuku. The bus is free and is part of the company's new Wa-shoi! service. You can use the bus if you have 1,000 Wa-shoi! points which you can get, as part of an introductory offer, by registering with the site within the next two weeks. Some businesses also will be giving out free vouchers but all reservations need to be made online. There will be sixteen buses a day, exclusively for foreigners, although Japanese will be able to travel if they are accompanying foreign friends. The website estimates that the journey will take about two hours.

The service has just been introduced so it's too early to tell whether it will be easy to get free places on the bus or whether there will be lots of strings attached. Obviously, H.I.S want to use it to guide tourists towards other businesses so it may be that vouchers will be available if you spend a certain amount in certain stores. H.I.S is also starting up Kaleidoscope which includes a multilingual support line and "concierge" service for tourists:

Lastly, the company has set up Experience Japan which is aimed at helping foreigners do things like "get in the ring with a sumo wrestler" or "learn how to make Japanese home cooking at a Japanese person's house" and "train like a Ninja at a Ninja School." All this is supposed to be on offer now but it doesn't seem as if all the links are live yet.

That Shinjuku drop off point isn't too great for first time visors and I don't know how mentally with it people are after their flight into Japan (at least folks from the east coast USA...I usually need to wake up around 3:30 AM local time because of the 2 hour pre flight check in for international flights on my early morning connecting flight out of my home town...by the time I get to the hotel in Tokyo, I probably would be willing to sign away internal organs for a bed.) The pickup/drop off in Akihabara doesn't make much sense since there isn't much in the way of hotels in that area nor does JR Akihabara station strike me as one of the more luggage friendly stations...although I guess if you shipped your bags off to the airport (but how many gaijins do this or even know about this), it could be handy for a last minute otaku goods romp, although you could just take a taxi to the Ueno skyliner instead
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

I linked to the English site but it is also in Chinese and Korean so H.I.S do have an eye on travellers who won't have jetlag and may be travelling light.

Akihabara is not a bad station to use these days. If you've got luggage then it's probably even a little easier to get on to the Yamanote line from the street than to do the same at Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station from the west side.

The Shinjuku stop-off point doesn't look particularly convenient unless you want to connect to the Oedo line or Seibu-Shinjuku line. If you time it right, though, you drop in to a great bar and get off your face on an enormous selection of Korean makori. That will make your jetlag irrelevant.

Just as H.I.S is offering new services for tourists, JTB will shortly be launching a new site called Japanican. They will be taking reservations on the site in June.

VISA has opened a website called Experience Tokyo With VISA which has details of some special promotions at Narita as well as shops in Shinjuku and Akihabara (e.g. 1,000 yen off purchases over 10,000 yen at LAOX, 5% off purchases over 20,000 yen at Yodobashi). More details in this PDF.

JTB has opened up the campaign for their Japanican site. They seem to have some pretty cheap summer hotel deals.

The Airport Limousine Bus service has just started a new route this month between Akihabara and Haneda Airport. It is mainly aimed at travellers living along the Tsukuba express line who currently have to head to Hamamatsucho and make an awkward transfer to the monorail.
