At last the news programs have mentioned the "Shame brought to Japan" her father spoke about.

If that was really them at the coffee house, how good if she had suggested/ insisted to teach him just there, but maybe she didn't want to be spotted by the school's staff/ colleauge. That apartment is just less than 500 meter from my house if you draw a straight line. I have passed by there countless time. Unlike what the news have reported, I don't think he is still around this area , I think it is quite easy to just steal bicycle and run, (and steal another one when it has broken) That can already bring him quite far.

Thanks for the news links ^-^

Just a guess > In the video Lindsay keeps touching hair. Maybe Tatsuya had introduced himself as a hair dresser before the meeting in the coffee house or during the lesson (if there was one). Maybe the coffee house was where they planed to have a short conversational lesson.

Straingly they went to Tatsuya`s room by Taxi. I believe the apartment was about 10 or 15 minutues walk. Maybe he promised to cut her hair? The police found some of her hair in a bag. While cutting somebodies hair it is probably the easiest way to strangle somebody. Their guard is down and back turned. :shakeh:

I touch my hair when I'm nervous or with a guy I fancy. If he had promised to cut her hair, why should she be bothered with how it looks at the moemnt? And anyway, would you trust this guy with your hair? He stalks you home, asks for an English lesson, only to cancel it as he wants to cut your hair..?!

Keeping this in perspective

Postby D. » Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:07 am

This a sad tragedy with all the makings of good news copy, foreigners (from either perspective unless you're a dual Brit/Japanese), safe country, salacious rumors/details, bizarre circumstances, etc. The only conclusions I would draw from this is that women the world over are all too often too trusting of men. That and having read some of the news commentary, Lesley Downer is apparently an idiot. I appreciate what she's trying to do (provide some perspective about Japan), but what the !@#$#!@?? There are no street gangs or hoodies in Japan?! What the hell do you call bosozoku and yakuza? I don't know how they would compare with their UK equivalents for danger, but jeez.

I am a bit(OK, very) confused about what the JT articles says about the video. It says her body was found a few hours after appearing on the CCTV but I thought the police went looking for her a day or two after she didn't come home.

If I am pondering whether to get my hair cut or not I would touch my hair....Thinking....`Erm, what should I do, what should I do, should I cut my hair?[font="] ].

I believe many Japanese people are used to showing a public face, when they are with close friends or at home their faces are totally different. If she trusted him enough to drink coffee with him, share a taxi with him and to go to his apartment. Why wouldn`t she trust him to cut her hair. It`s the perfect excuse. Of course in hindsight we would all think this guy is a sick freak and never trust him. However, most women would agree, that they would never go to a guys apartment they certainly did not know or trust. I think he is cleaver than many people might think and he knew what he was doing.

Not too sure about that Behan, I think it was two or so days after she was reported missing, the police searched Tatsuya`s flat after finding his number and name in her diary.

Recently, the staff at the coffee shop remember a woman fitting Lindsay’s description the day of her murder(Not sure???). They reported to the police and recently the video footage has been shown. The staff at the coffee shop have told the police after drinking coffee they got in a taxi together.

Also some people reported that Tatsuya said `DO YOU REMEMBER ME` in the station. Not sure if this was the same day they drank coffee together though. Also no light has been shead on how they met for the first time, prehaps in a bar. Tatsuya has been spotted in many `GAIJIN` bars around the same area before the murder.

They are starting to protect the murderer already.
Uyoku TV channel 4 has just interviewed a crime psychologist from Tokyo Kogaku Daigaku, prof Kageyama who after viewing the coffee shop video claims Ichihashi had not premeditated the murder.

It was also reported that Ichihashi had stalked another foreign woman 6 months prior to this incident.

It is interesting that they could find a criminal pshycologist at an Engineering University so conversant in the field. I wonder how he could determine premeditation just from that video? But, the J-media always have some expert, from some University, somewhere, standing by to comment on any topic! I wonder if they have them on retainer!

Sorry if I am making a big point out of nothing, but the timing of it is not going through my thick skull.
A BBC article says she first went there Saturday to give him lessons.
The video picture is Sunday morning(the 25th) and she should be at Nova for a 10:50 start.
Then they apparently took a taxi to his apartment.
She was reported missing by her roommate Monday afternoon.
Her body was found Monday night.

So had she taught him at his apartment once before?

This case has caught my attention as I worked for Nova for a long time and I don't live so far from Funabashi.

I don't know what article you saw but the lesson was scheduled for Sunday morning. He had obviously approached her before that to ask for lessons which is where there may be some confusion on dates. Some say the lesson was schedule for 9:00, other accounts say 9:30. It's more likely that it was 9:00 and, since the CCTV footage apparently shows them in the coffee shop from around 8:50 to 9:45, that could well have been the lesson time. This is all guesswork, though, and there is no reason to think that all the information known to the police has been made available to the public.

Here's a comment piece from the Guardian:

Reinventing 'yellow peril'
...A racial stereotype floats up from the case that hasn't been employed since the days of Orwell]
The responses to this piece haven't been kind. For instance:
Jeez. A young woman is raped, murdered, and buried in sand but nevermind that: what really matters here is to waffle on about a racist stereotyping of the Japanese which hasn't even happened.

I would have ignored that particular post if wasn't so utterly rotten (literally) and uncalled for. Most visitors of this board are either very new or aren't members at all and don't have the luxury of an ignore list. Which was also the reason why I got so pissed off at him for posting in Umbrelladown's topic.

Thankfully one of our mods was kind enough to remove the pictures he posted.

Some articles also say that she was teaching him 'every Saturday'.

And a news video said that Nova contacted the police because she was missing, but I thought it was the roommate. Maybe both did.

I am not trying to split hairs, but just curious whether that was the first time they had met for a lesson. It seems that he chased her to her apartment at least once.

Had he been stalking other girls, too?

I agree with the Guardian article. I don't think you can stereotype the whole country from this one case.

A quote from page two of this thread:

'They said she went to the apartment each Saturday to give English lessons to 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihachi' (I added the bold)

But when I went to the actual article it said:

"They said she had gone to the apartment for the first time on Saturday to give English lessons to 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihashi. "

Sorry, not trying to annoy anyone over this. Just curious what happened. I wonder if there is any new news or leads on the suspect.

She hadn't been seen since Saturday but maybe that was just due to spending the night somewhere else or staying out all night. I'd hate to think that she spent the night with the killer. Not that that is important to the case.
