I've always hated riding rush-hour trains and thankfully these days I very rarely do. Bicycle or car -- more bike right now 'cause gas prices are insane. (Heh, and I need the exercise.)

But when I do ride rush-hour trains I'm paranoid that I will brush someone the wrong way or be pressed against some hypersensitive nutter. If that was to happen, who are the cops/station staff going to believe? That would seriously suck.

I know... one time I had a can of coke in my hand on a super packed train and my hand was pressed against some womans camel toe that was about 3 people away from me.

Are all the gaijin women that cry foul sure the person as actualy the person directaly behind them?

Well one great thing about japan is that there is no law about resisting arrest. So as soon as you are out of the train and see trouble just bolt. You wont get shot and running does not imply guilt.

What gaijin women are cying foul neonecro? Your "anti-group-think" attempts are making you seem more of a projecting stereotyper than a true independant thinker. Or are these just your misogyenistic tendencies running amok again? You need to get laid boy.

If anything, there is more talk about the problem of chikans than chikans themselves. People working themselves into a lather about a problem that, while gross, is not endemic of the whole society. I catch many trains a day and in over 5 years I have only seen a handful (pun intended) of chikans or potential chikans.

It is like the "all crime is caused by foreigners" nonsense. It makes for good conversation but that is about it.

I don't think he meant people "crying foul" as in "crying wolf"... I think he was wondering how many people have been falsely accused at some point.

I don't think the numbers would be that high for false accusations, but it's probably happened...

Independent: We're not all gropers, say Japan's male commuters
For years they have been the silent terror of the Japanese underground - groping male hands whose owners make use of almost impossibly crowded conditions in carriages to fondle women commuters beside them. Or have they? Smarting under the announcement that underground chiefs are to introduce more women-only carriages in 2006, Japan's male commuters are up in arms over attacks on their allegedly roving hands.

Their beef is that the new system is blatantly sexist and offers women commuters an easier ride - literally, in this case - on account of crimes many men say they never commit. "Other carriages get so crowded now. It feels like we have been punished for something we didn't do," Hisashi Yoshizawa, one impugned male commuter, complained. "It's not right to introduce women-only carriages."

For all the anger of Japan's male commuters, underground bosses in cities such as Tokyo and Osaka are unlikely to reverse the trend towards subway sex segregation.Too many women say they have had enough of men's insinuating digits making their already stressful travel arrangements hell. Recent surveys showed 64 per cent of women commuters said they had been groped, and a record 2,201 cases were reported on Tokyo commuter trains last year.

Japan's police take the phenomenon ever more seriously, too, patrolling carriages and brandishing fines of up to 50,000 yen . In a radical, or perhaps just desperate, attempt to nab what they believe are around 150 hard-core gropers, the police are even turning to forensic analysis. Thanks to a new system perfected in Osaka, western Japan, they can match tiny fabric fibres extracted by sticky film from the palms of known suspects with the clothes of women victims. It sounds almost impossibly complex, but the Osaka police say it helped them to convict 16 of the city's worst subway gropers last year. According to Michiaki Tatsuno, of the Osaka police crime laboratory: "This step will help deter the molesters from striking."

I don't think so in her case Chas. The reason she is smiling is that all the man-haters will be on the "gals only" ride and she is heading for the "groupers only" car, hoping to bask in the attention of being the only female on the car.

Hell, then they might as well have "groping" and "non-groping" designated cars. Then the recipients of such hands-on attention will be a self-selected group and the men won't have to worry about jail time! (Of course, if the self-selected group consisted of only women like the one shown above, groping will become virtually extinct in Japan.)

They couldn't even hire their own graphic designer to come up with an original design for that sign? Sheesh!

Tobu Railway's anti-molestation campaign soured after employee molests passenger
Mainichi
IRUMA, Saitama -- A senior railway worker has been arrested for molesting a woman on a train operated by his employer, police said.

Tomio Momiyama, a 50-year-old supervisor at Tobu Railway Co.'s Shiki train depot in Saitama Prefecture, is accused of violating a prefectural anti-nuisance ordinance. He denied the allegations during questioning, investigators said.

The incident occurred while Tobu Railway, the operator of a major railway network in the Kanto region, is in the middle of a massive campaign for preventing molestation on trains.

Momiyama fondled a 24-year-old beautician's thighs on a semi-express train over a 15-minute period late Thursday night while the train was traveling between Kasumigaseki and Tsurugashima stations on the Tojo Line in Saitama Prefecture, investigators said....more...

Daring director uses fake groping case to take a crack at Japan's legal vultures
Mainichi
One of Japan's finest movie directors is taking a rare shot at Japan's judicial system and he's using accused train molesters to do so, according to Sunday Mainichi (12/17).

Masayoshi Suo made a name for himself directing such hit comedies as "Shall We Dance," which Hollywood picked up and re-made with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, and "Shiko Funjatta," the tale of a hapless university sumo team that makes good.

Suo is about to release his first movie in 11 years. It's going to be called "Sore Demo Boku ha Yatteinai (I Still Didn't Do it)," a flick about a man falsely accused of groping a female commuter.

The movie traces the accused man's story as he battles his case through the courts and has the unfair verdict handed down against him upheld for political reasons in a work damning of the Japanese judiciary.

Suo started working on the movie about four years ago. He was inspired by a newspaper story about Takashi Yatabe, a company worker whose conviction for molesting a female train commuter was overturned after it was revealed that she had made up her accusation against him....more...

Mainichi: Visually-impaired want railways to clarify stance on riding in women-only carriages
Visually-impaired people often find themselves in trouble when riding in Tokyo's women-only train carriages, since most women are unaware that such coaches are also open to handicapped passengers. The Japan Federation of the Blind is urging railway companies to publicize the fact that physically handicapped people can also ride in women-only cars...The private railway industry body admitted that it has failed to promote publicity on the matter. "We've failed to actively publicize that handicapped passengers can ride in women-only carriages through stickers or public addresses. It's true that we haven't done enough, and we'd like to take measures to notify the public that such carriages are also open to the disabled," said an official of the Association of Japanese Private Railways...more...
