Hachiko Dognapped

[floatl]Image[/floatl]METAL THIEVES SUSPECTED
Shibuya's 'loyal dog Hachiko' vanishes

A team of audacious thieves, apparently disguised as a cleaning crew, made off with one of Tokyo's most famous landmarks in the early hours of Saturday.

The statue of "loyal dog Hachiko," a popular rendezvous spot on the north side of JR Shibuya Station since 1934, was reported missing shortly after dawn, when a newspaper delivery truck driver spotted the bare pedestal and notified policemen at the nearby "koban."

While motives for the theft are uncertain, speculation has focused on the soaring prices for copper and other metals, spurred by the construction boom in China leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The National Police Agency reported 5,701 metal thefts in 2006, with losses valued at 2 billion yen. The 198 thefts reported in Tokyo during January and February 2007 represented a fourfold jump from the same period last year.

Theft of the icon has spurred an international outcry. Shibuya Ward's Sister City, the Sixth Arrondissement of Paris, France, expressed its "profound sympathy" and promptly offered to cast a new replacement for "le toutou fidele," provided Shibuya agrees to accept a poodle.

This will probably get more police manpower than the British girl's murderer.

Incidentally, I once talked to an old Japanese guy who remembers the actual dog. The guy said, there used to be a butcher nearby who gave the dog scraps daily and that is why the dog turned up everyday.

Perhaps we should have that in Japanese text books?:D

The poodle reference gives it away.

And it looks like the Doctor was not the only one with a Japan-related April Fools' Day article . . .

Japanese "Sake Cows" produce wine gene

Image

Scientists in Japan claim to have discovered a gene which simulates the effects of yeast fermentation inside the udders of 鉄ake Cows・enabling them to produce the base ingredients for wine. The wonders of genetic engineering allow scientists to replace the gene for making lactose with an artificial gene that produces pure alcohol.Dr Shuji Sakegami, a researcher in the Bio-Engineering department at Kyoto University came up with the idea of replacing milk in the udders with another liquid because his two year old daughter, Nowai Sakegami didn稚 respond well to the transition from human to animal milk. Although alcohol is clearly not suitable for young Nowai the rest of the world is about to be shaken and probably stirred, by this stunning move.Japan of course has a long history of linking alcohol with animals. Kobe beef, which produces the world famous Wagyu steaks is the precursor to Dr Sakegami痴 idea. Kobe cows are fed on a diet of beer during the Summer months in order to increase the marbling layers of fine fatty acids in the steak, as well as lighten the mood of the animal. Clearly allowing the cow to give something back to alcohol drinkers is something that should be encouraged.Although the process is in its infancy the implications for the wine industry are huge. Should Dr Sakegami痴 research come to fruition (or fermentation if you will) we could see the first commercially produced wine from a mobile vineyard within 15 to 20 years. The news is sure to promote backlash amongst animal rights activists and traditional alcohol producers in equal measure. . . . more

And the guy you once talked to is sure about that right? The dof told him why it was showing up everyday.

Yeah Jack, you're right. Someone's got to move this country back to how it was in the good old days before the Chinese taught the Japanese how to read, write, and grow rice.

The best April Fool's story I've seen so far this year is on a certain Sw*dish f*le sh*ring s*te.
