dinosaur pc

Postby james » Fri Apr 06, 2007 10:15 am

i am involved in a project with an acquaintance of mine that involves a specific model of nec pc-9801 machine. unfortunately, searches on yahoo auctions, rakuten etc are no longer turning any up (of this specific model).

i'd be interested in hearing of other leads where one can get these old machines.

Or you could try a computer museum.

Funnily that was my suggestion too... James didn't seem to take me seriously though!

emulators won't work (we've tried). the software we are running makes direct calls to the bios, which is either not properly emulated or not supported. the other problem is that it makes use of instructions specific to the v30. there are also control cards that link the software to an external peripheral. if it were "self-contained" software that didn't control anything outside of itself, this would be a whole lot easier. anyway, for that and other reasons, for the time being we need the actual hardware.

wonder where nec keeps their shit landfilled..

If you have time walk the streets of Akihabara. Sometimes you may come across a place that you have passed by a few times but never noticed. I have come across some old NEC stuff in hole in the wall places and dumpster diving.
