[floatr]Image[/floatr]Asahi: Female blogger gets 10-year sentence for arson attacks
A court Monday handed a 10-year prison sentence to a 21-year-old woman who set buildings on fire for pleasure and posted pictures of the blazes on her Web log for fame... The court pointed out that Hirata had committed the crime for pleasure. "She found that setting a fire was irresistibly fun, and began to escalate her crimes," the ruling said. "She felt the Suwa area, where she lived, was becoming famous because news reports covered the arsons"...Nagano prefectural police suspected Hirata was behind the fires because she knew details of the crimes that only the perpetrator could have known...more...

So how much property damage did she actually cause? 10 years is a very long time for a shed, a few cars and an abandoned gymnasium. Plus, no-one actually got hurt.

But I guess they just had to flush this girl's life down the shitter. Remind me how much actual jail time rapists and murderers typically get in this country. Bastards.

Fire is one of those cultural things.

<nihonjinron>
Fire is a unique threat to the Japanese, because of the unique construction methods in buildings and the risk of rapid spread of the conflagration in crowded cities.

Be that as it may, arson has always been a very serious crime in Japan because paper and wood were the material of choice for building homes. So yeah, arson is ranked right up there with murder and rape in terms of punishment. But if you were the least bit open minded you would not pass a judgement without knowing. Remember, Japanese are better people than you are, like it or not, and have no lessons to learn from losers like you.

It all depends. The tone of Tsuru's post was rather patronising implying that he knows better than those who are charged with enforcing the Law without even knowing the Law himself. Japan, and I say this with 100% certainty, has no lessons to learn from Tsuru, regarding the enforcement of its Laws.

If I were Tsuru, I'd say the girl is very doable and too bad she is such a deranged person. Having said that, I'd probably forgive her and try her on for size.

Arson has long been a heavily punished crime with, as Charles says, the potentially devastating effects of fire with so much wooden construction. I don't know if there is any data to show whether fires claim more lives on average in Japan than other developed countries but it does seem as if the legal system treats arson almost as attempted murder. Fear of fire does have a grip on the imagination. The massacre of Koreans after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 was fuelled by rumours that they had been starting fires and poisoning wells.

An NHK reporter picked up a seven year sentence for several cases of arson earlier this year - the prosecution asked for twelve. The girl may have drawn a heavier sentence because her motive appeared to be self-promotion which is unlikely to draw any sympathy in Japan. She may also not have been deemed "sincere" when she offered an apology.

It seems that arson attacks attract a lot of media coverage; recent cases are the Donki fires, where the culprit was caught, and the Kabukicho fire where no arrest has been made. Five died in 2001 when a robber set fire to a Takefuji office in Aomori. Gboothe probably remembers back in 1980 that a Keio Teito bus bound for Nakano was firebombed at Shinjuku Station west exit, killing six and injuring 14. The Daegu subway arson in South Korea which killed nearly 200 a few years go received enormous attention in Japan. That kind of coverage will always affect sentencing.

I realize that, but I think this kind of law enforcement in a time where everything new is made from glass, steel and concrete is obsolete. No matter the reason why she might have done it or what might have happened if, the fact remains no-one was hurt. Another example: did you know that the highest-punishable felony in Holland is tax fraud? Murderers and rapists who destroy people's lives usually get off with serving less than 10 years of actual jail time and/or psy treatment, after which they are free to continue doing what they did before going to jail, but you better tell the government about every single penny you have or there'll be hell to pay.

People who are not Jack can stop reading.

Yes. The buck-toothed, slit-eyed, jaundiced backward Chinese-Russian-Korean traitors inhabiting a group of islands in the East Sea of Korea who started, yet lost the fucking war and have never invented anything of their own. Such a thing could never happen in Europe. :ninja2:

Except my fiancee of course. And our friends. And her parents. And her grandparents. And their friends.

See where I'm going with this? Fucking idiot.

But you're not. I'm very pleased with that, because if you were me, then I would be you and that would definitely suck. Not in the last place because my dick would be too small to facilitate effective procreation.

So how are things at Boeing? Spoken to a lot of their engineers lately have you? I thought I told you to shut the fuck up and my opinion regarding this matter hasn't changed all that much in the meantime. So kindly, crawl the fuck back into the moist, mold-plastered hole you came out of.

Thanks for the laugh. Am I going to shut up because Tsuru-sama told me to shut the fuck up? Man you really are some patronising prick aren't you?

You defy any logic with regards to how stupid and narrow-minded you are. If your wife is Japanese she must be so miserable with a norrow-minded pig like you.

Anyhow, so, just because there are some glass and concrete buildings in Shinagawa and Shinjuku Japan should change its Laws regarding arson right? Because Tsuru thinks arson Laws in Japan are stupid.

A friend of mine who studied psychology once told me that people who call other people names have a tendency to project the feelings they have towards themselves onto other people. Jack seems to be a classic case of this, compounded by the fact that he doesn't tolerate anyone more arrogant and patronising than himself in his immediate surroundings.

I do get called arrogant a lot. This, in itself, is not a problem, because it only seem to be the people who had a little taster of success and think they can act in an arrogant and patronizing way, only to be dwarfed by my truthfully colossal ego are the ones who have problems with it.

I think Jack is one of those guys who, in real life, purposefully stands very close to the urinal.

Nice explanation but you got something very wrong. Where did I call you "names"? I already said in a previous thread that I'm not gonna swear anymore cause that's a role I am not suited to play. On the other hand, I got tons of logic in my posts but it seems to be lost on you.

Oh, and the bit in your initial post where you tried to imply that I was making a racist comment. In light of my previous post, I think we both know what that means don't we?
Jack wrote:that's a role I am not suited to play.
Good thing you figured that out for yourself. Now go away.

Tsuru-sama, how many times I'm gonna tell you I know exactly what I am. At least in my case I don't put other races down. I'm a fucking (sorry scratch that as I promised no swearing). I'm an English speaking white guy and I keep saying that yellow people are better people than white folks. So call me whatever name you wish, for it's all true and I admit it. Be that as it may, you still have to respond to logical arguments by respecting other cultures without putting them down.

If you had actually taken the time in your busy daily life to read what I wrote, instead of only quoting and responding to the sentences that you like, you would have found I already responded to the only decent argument you have managed to come up with so far a lot of posts ago. I'm still waiting for you to come back on that one.
Mind you, you could work on improving your writing skills on here... took me a lot of time to find that only peanut in the bucket of shit that your posting on here may be likened to.

But only if you can squeeze that into your already full calendar, of course. :spin:
