Vonnegut Died

One of America's greatest authors. It's not getting much media play because someone said 'Nappy-headed hos'. That's about it from the homefront today.

I didn't care that much for his style, but who am I? He was a great writer. RIP!

"Slaughterhouse Five" included a line that has always stuck with me:
"'Go take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut,' murmered Paul Lazzaro in his azure nest. 'Go take a flying fuck at the moon.'"

In "Slapstick" he brings it back but writes "moon" like this: mooooooooooooooooon.

The rolling donut dig is an old miltary standard. It dates to the WWI and WWII days when the Red Cross volunteer gals used to hand out the donuts. The belief that the officers got the volunteers and the enlisted men were left with the donuts, led to coining this extremely handy phrase. I still use it frequently with emphasis!

That a side a lot of Vonnegut's slang and especially his vulgarity, originated from his days in the military and especially during the time he was a POW guest of Big Adolf and the boys.

I love his books. His way of making light of horribly painful things in life with compassion made reading his books like taking a huge sigh of relief. I'm sad he's passed. So it goes.

I'm sure Vonnegut would want someone to remember: he was an asshole.

He was a virtual unknown in Oz when I lived there, but an American friend intoduced me to his works not long after I arrived in Tokyo. I immediately fell in love with his writing...I'd never read anything as bizarre and absolutely loved his irreverance.
It's been years since I've read anything of his, but I hope he's enjoying himself now.

Whenever I think about him I think of the microscopic chinese men in Slapstick and start wondering if that really would make things better on this planet. lol.
