10 local politicians set up anti-election noise campaign
MSN-Mainichi Daily News - April 16, 2007 --- Ten local politicians, mostly those running in the second round of the unified local elections next Sunday, have set up a network opposing the blaring of candidates' names from loudspeakers on election campaign cars.....candidate, who is running in Tokyo's Chofu Municipal Assembly election on the ticket of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), said as he launched his campaign."Blaring candidates' names from loudspeakers is a nuisance and its effect is doubtful. We shouldn't waste taxpayers' money," said a 28-year-old candidate ....
....10 incumbent members of the Hitachi Municipal Assembly in Ibaraki Prefecture, who are seeking re-election, are refraining from using campaign cars and instead delivered street speeches using hand-held microphones. :wall:

I hate them damn cars, Having said that, that is the only reason I now know all the candidates names. However, if I were legible to vote, I wouldnt vote for any of those I have heard pronounced from the car loudspeakers, they piss me off that much.

Im sure they have an effect, but is it the effect they are looking for? or a negative impact? I also would much prefer they didnt use tax payers money to do so, and certainly not after 5pm, I have heard them at 9pm at night. Disgraceful.

it was good going until that last bit.. the :wall: emoticon here is all too appropriate here. it's a start though. at least though some people are waking up to the fact that all this noise is extremely obnoxious and that it's completely pointless.

just out of curiosity, are the loudspeaker cars an adoption of an american idea? i can't help but think of that scene from back to the future.

wonder where i could get one of those jackets.

on the subject of noise - even after 8 or 9 years here, i still find the 11.30 morning air raid siren to be *extremely* annoying. 12.00 in the town 15 mins from here, so if you hop in your car and drive, you can listen twice! is this purely an inaka thing? during fire-safety week they sound them at 8 p.m. too. i've only half-jokingly considered on more than one occasion of rendering them inoperable.

i couldn't agree more. even if i could vote, i'd strike every damn name off the list that was blared at me.

those fuckers were right outside my classroom (not even 10m away) talking with my father-in-law and even then, the bitch on the mic would not shut the fuck up. what i would have given to have some kind of directional microwave beam in my posession that day.

There's a simple solution: the people who can vote just don't vote for the a$$hole$ with the campaign cars.

Another simple solution: don't ban speaker trucks but legalize every measure deemed necessary to shut them up, up to and including high-powered explosives, incendiary bombs and automatic weapons. This way everybody wins.

I've always said this, but does it seem like there's always some kind of election happening every other month? Jesus, they just had the Tokyo mayoral election last week and now they are having another one on the 22nd! They need to consolidate all the election in to one like they do in the US.

Those were gubernatorial elections. Every prefecture has a governor while mayors are elected to municipalities. Tokyo, as the capital, has a special status: it resembles a prefecture but, through the 23 ward system, also acts as a unified city. Ishihara is a governor, not a mayor.
