Working permit for the UK - needed?

Question on behalf of a Canadian friend.

She has just landed a new job here in the big Mikan and is being sent to the UK for 3 months of training. She will be paid her salary in Japan in Japanese yen but will get a stipend while in the UK. She will also have to head into other EU countries for part of the training from time to time.

Will she need a work permit for the UK? As a Canadian citizen she can have around 6 months on a "tempory visitor" or tourist visa but does she need to apply for a work permit? If not, what should she put on her arrival card - visiting friends or work?

My instinct is that she will not need a work visa but could somebody correct me if I am wrong. She is not going to need a bank account or health insurance or any of that sort of stuff. But it is a long time to be somewhere for business.

She asked me but as I have a british citizenship, I have never had to think about it when I go for business.

You and the sweet drag-on didn't need a work permit to become a janitor there at the University, did you?

Gomi, I am a bit dated on the info, so let me check and give you a spot on this tomorrow! Some of our people (not all) have been required to get work permits when then went for study and research, because they were technically employed in the same field. It was case by case, and of course they were Japanese not Canadians. BTW, I still think SG's dragon is gay.

When I was a lad, any Canadian who had grandparent born in the UK could get a work permit there and anyone with a parent born there could get citizenship. That may well have changed. But I imagine that sending people over for training shouldn't be a problem. Doesn't the company know about it? If they have sent Japanese to Britian before than I can't imagine it being any different.

But it doesn't really answer my question as it is for people who are going to be earning a salary in the UK. But it seems that it will only take a week or so once all the forms are in.

Well, I don't know. You know how them sneaky them big lizards can be and how they do like to tell tall tails. He just might just be slipping on his muskrat and sneaking out when you ain't paying attention. Be easy enough to do, with all that time you spend in front of the mirror taking temperature readings and admiring them brown long handles, or what ever that was you was a wearing!
