K-tei translation help

Does anybody know any good i-appli program or something that will help me translate Japanese emails to English. Recently some of my students have been mailing me and even though I ask them to do it in English they don't feel comfortable and they write in Japanese. My old phone was able to read out the message and I could understand most of it, but my newer SH702is is not able to. So what I need is a sight or application that will allow me to translate it, or read it out to me in Japanese. Thanks in advance.

Turn the students into teachers. Get them to translate the messages in class.
That way you and they will benefit.
I'm not trying to be an a'hole about this, trust me it works.

But if a student is canceling a class or something like that. I need to be able to read it and understand it, so I can reply. And since I'm so damn busy this semester I don't leave my phone on so they can't contact me that way, only by mail. Hence the need for the translation software.

Sorry canman, I just realised, you want something for you cell phone, not your pc.
Can't help you there. 'Course you could always make use of the locals, grab one and ask them to read your mail out to you.

Tangotown comes to mind. It's compatible with any post-pay Japanese phone that accesses the internet. Find it on your 'official menu' or contact the Keitai Goddess here - I'm sure she'll gladly help!

Jim Breen's WWWJDIC is not too bad for translating small blocks of text from J===>E. There are pages for keitai text, j to e, and e to j.

Mike, you beat me to it. Jim's site at Monash is pretty nice and I use it frequently, especially if I am in a hurry on a translation. Charles probably would not recommend because of his sexual hang-up on wombats, but it's an otherwise good site.

Just cut and paste the whole email into the translation engine for a machine translation - which is as good an engine as you are going to find that is not human.... meaning it is not perfect - especially in respect to slang etc but you can get the idea.

Alternatively, use the kanji dictionaries (again cutting and pasting) for translation of just the kanji you don't know - much better solution.

Also, for sending emails, we have built a huge glossary of pre translated emails for standard phrases (greetings, condolences, invitations etc) that will open directly into your keitai email application. We have this option for self translated phrases too.. but again this is machine translation so the standard caveats apply.
