'World is walking 10% faster'
ITV News - 8.50, Wed May 2 2007
....The findings, from 32 countries, reflect the fact that increasing numbers of people are living in the fast lane.Teams with stop watches timed how long it took 35 men and women to walk along a 60ft stretch of pavement.....
Researchers in each city found a busy street with a wide pavement that was flat, free from obstacles, and sufficiently uncrowded to allow people to walk at their maximum speed....
The average walking times in seconds from each city studied were as follows:
1) Singapore (Singapore); 10.55
2) Copenhagen (Denmark); 10.82
3) Madrid (Spain); 10.89
4) Guangzhou (China): 10.94
5) Dublin (Ireland); 11.03
6) Curitiba (Brazil); 11.13
7) Berlin (Germany); 11.16
8 ) New York (US); 12.00
[snip][floatl]Image[/floatl]
12) London (United Kingdom); 12.17
13) Zagreb (Croatia); 12.20
14) Prague (Czech Republic); 12.35
15) Wellington (New Zealand); 12.62
16) Paris (France); 12.65
17) Stockholm (Sweden); 12.75
18 ) Ljubljana (Slovenia); 12.76
19) Tokyo (Japan); 12.83
...more...

Talk about a stupid survey and the logic behind it.
Taking a 60 feet long pavement anywhere, just because, and clocking the speed at which people are walking tells you absolutely nothing.

It is quite informative and tells you exactly how long it tooke them to walk 60 feet. They are going to follow this up to varify their conclusions by timing all walkers over 73.2 feet of flat pavement. Japan will not be included because it does not have any location that is 73.2 feet long in any one direction.
19) Tokyo (Japan)]I'm not sure about the results, but people are fucking turtles here. Was just in Hong Kong an was impressed with all the raised, covered walkways connecting buildings and the speed with which people walk. It's like they actually have a destination...

I've said it before; I think people meander here because their destination sucks just as bad as the place they just left.. And I can't really blame them; In Japan, 'the skirt-journey is the destination'. ;)

Could it be telling you that pigeon-toed girls don't walk that fast?

I know what you mean or whether you mean it in a MEAN way but my daughter has exactly what you say. At her young age she looks cute but when she gets older I know how that gonna look.

With you for a father image, her posture will probably be the last thing she'll have to worry about.

And what father image is that?
Let me see, my daughter lives in a four-car garage, 6,000 square feet house. She and her siblings have everything they need and more. She will probably have a great education.
There are tons of people in our house every week for various parties including many families with kids her age.
She travels everywhere with her dad. She is only two and has travelled quite a bit already.
She has a great family on her mother and father's side.
The way I see it, her father's image is the envy of most people. But you hate it because I say and gloat over it. Eat your heart out. Live off your 200,000 yen a month income.

Your monetary wealth, though we only have your word that it exists, is of no concern to me. It's more your apparent lack of morals as a husband to your daughter's mother.:(

No need to duck GB. Your wit gives me comfort in the knowledge that there is still the possibility of a certain grace in living life here to the full. I'm no cultural conservative disdainfully referring to Jack's bragging as anything I haven't been guilty of myself.
I just enjoy firing shots across his bow.
