Aljazeera.Net: Dissent threatens sect's return
[Aum Shinrikyo], which released Sarin gas into Tokyo's underground system and killed 12 people in 1995, is trying to give itself a makeover in the hope of attracting new members. But hardline elements within the sect oppose abandoning the core teachings upon which the group was founded..."It is hard to believe, but people are still joining the cult," said Susumu Shimazono, a professor of religion at Tokyo University...According to Yoshifu Arita, an analyst who is keeping a close watch on the sect's activities, its membership presently stands at around 1600 people, 80% of whom are hardliners...more...

I always wondered why, if all the followers had to wear those to stay tuned into Asahara, who was he tuned into with his? FEN maybe? Wolfman Jack?

From what I've read, those devices gave low level electroshock treatments, which were given long-term with only one goal: to fuck up your head. No "tuning in" to anything with that device, just tuning OUT reality.

Apparently, they were quite successful. As I understand it, they were told when they put those on, true believers and only true real believers could receive or join Asahara's brain wave lengths and receive his teachings direct.

Maybe the forerunner of an Ipod?

However, having been on the last subway train allowed through Kasumiseki on the morning of the salin attack, I would recommend they plug Asahara's helmet/panties into the wall socket! Capital punishment is not at issue with me for that clown!

Yeah, I discussed this in another thread a while back. I picked up the English translation of Murakami Haruki's book "Underground" with extensive interviews and reporting on the sarin attack, and was surprised to discover the English edition had new material not in the original Japanese edition: interviews with Aum members. There were a couple of interviews with Aum members who used the brain zappers, one of them was a young girl that Asahara wanted to fuck, so he made sure her brain was scrambled by drugs and the zapper and then he could do whatever he wanted to her. Unsurprisingly, her brains are still fried. That story irritates the hell out of me because she claims she has amnesia about the events of that time, so she could either be deeply involved in the attacks, or just an innocent victim, but with no memories, she obviously desperately wants to believe she is innocent. Or she could be lying about everything.

Asahi: Aum Shinrikyo worshipping Matsumoto, justifying attacks
The Public Security Intelligence Agency on Friday requested three more years of surveillance on Aum Shinrikyo, saying the cultists have returned to a mind-set that justifies mass murder and other attacks against society...The group has again acknowledged its founder, Chizuo Matsumoto, as the ''absolute presence,'' agency officials said...Moreover, they are again justifying the sarin attack in Tokyo and another nerve gas assault in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, in June 1994 that killed seven. ''We initiated (the attacks) in the hopes of establishing a wonderful country,'' agency officials quoted the cultists as saying.

Kyodo via Crisscross: Rival Aum factions to hold separate seminars
Two rival factions of the religious cult known formerly as Aum Shinrikyo plan to hold separate seminars for lay followers from Dec 29 to Jan 3 in Chiba, Osaka, Saitama and Kyoto, intelligence authority sources said Sunday. Aum "representative" Fumihiro Joyu, 43, has been distancing himself from the cult's operations since October 2003, but at the seminar he will preach for the first time in two and a half years, they said. Another group led by Tatsuko Muraoka, 55, who is ranked as the cult's "chairwoman," will hold its seminar as in previous years, the sources said.
