ChosunIlbo: Experts Argue Over Korea-Japan Undersea Tunnel
Public attention is again focused on the proposed construction of a undersea tunnel in Busan that would link Korea and Japan, an idea that has long been reviewed and discussed by both countries. Busan City Hall and the Busan Development Institute will host an international conference on the proposed tunnel next Tuesday to discuss why it's needed. Currently three tunnels are under review. The first at 209 km would link Karatsu in Saga Prefecture, Japan to the southern island known as Shimonoshima of Japan's Tsushima to Geoje in Korea's South Gyeongsang Province. The second tunnel (217 km) would link Karatsu to the nothern island (or Kaminoshima) of Tsushima, to Geoje. The third tunnel (231 km) would link Karatsu to Tsushima to Busan. Each of the routes has been suggested by Japanese experts who have studied the idea. Whichever route is chosen, its length would be more than four times that of the Channel Tunnel (50.54km) linking Britain and France. If it's built, it would be the longest undersea tunnel in the world...The main issue is whether the project is economically feasible. Supporters say it would make money because Japanese shippers would pay toll charges to send cargo from Japan to the continent...But the project's opponents say Korea would gain nothing from a tunnel, and it would only end up helping Japan advance into the continent...more...

Most of Japanese wholeheartedly oppose to dig the hole for Kimchi-smelling cockroachs.

Reuters: Japan lawmakers want "peace tunnel" to South Korea
Japan and South Korea, long at odds over their wartime history, should be linked by a railway tunnel under the sea symbolising peaceful ties, a group of Japanese lawmakers was reported as saying on Friday. The cross-party group of parliamentarians is proposing a 128 km (80 miles) tunnel that would be part of a rail link between Karatsu on Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu and Pusan in South Korea via two Japanese islands, Kyodo news agency said. The tunnel -- which would be more than twice as long as the Channel Tunnel connecting Britain and France -- could one day allow passengers to travel by rail from Tokyo to London, Kyodo quoted lawmakers as saying. "This is a dream-inspiring project," Kyodo quoted former defense chief Seishiro Eto as telling reporters after a meeting with other interested lawmakers from various parties. "We'd like to promote it as a symbol of peace-building." The lawmakers' group first plans to try to persuade Tokyo and Seoul to fund a feasibility study, Kyodo said...more...

Sounds like one massive white-elephant

But there's a competitor to, go North and link N.Japan to EastRussia/Siberia

thats going to Sakhalin Island - which would be 25 miles (42km) long and there would be 2nd tunnel built from Sakhalin to the Siberian Russian

I think both projects are a waste but if I had to pick one, its north not south and here is the reason
Siberian 42km tunnel VS Korean 128km (3 times less concrete and probably 5 times less expensive) and you'll find a lot of gas/oil pumped along that route.
