High school student Ryo Ishikawa won the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the Japanese men's professional tour.

Ishikawa, a 15-year-old former national junior high school champion, shot a 6-under-par 66 in the final round for a one-stroke win over veteran Katsumasa Miyamoto in his first tour appearance.

"It was a dream round," said Ishikawa, who finished at 12-under 276. "I just kept trying to make birdies." The previous record was set by Spain's Seve Ballesteros, who won the 1977 Japan Open when he was 20.

Ishikawa became the first teenager to win since the Japanese men's tour was established in 1973 and first amateur winner since Masahiro Kuramoto took the Chugoku-Shikoku Open title in 1980 at age 25.

He shot 72-69 in the first two rounds to make the cut in a tie for 23rd. After a 69 in the third round, he surged up the leaderboard on Sunday with seven birdies against a lone bogey.

Well done.

In a few years he can have a celebratory drink.

Yomiuri: TBS tried to eavesdrop on young golf prodigy
A competitor at a Kanto region amateur golf championship this week turned down a request from TBS television to wear small microphones while playing with golf prodigy Ryo Ishikawa at the tournament in Chiba Prefecture, it was learned Wednesday. The public relations committee of the Kanto Golf Association, which hosts the tournament, will convene Friday and send a letter of protest to the broadcaster about the request made by the "Pin Pon!" news and information show. The association said TBS' request to plant the microphones was learned when the competitor it approached told tournament officials of the plan to eavesdrop on the 15-year-old Ishikawa, who won the Munsingwear Open in May, becoming the youngest player ever to win a pro tournament. It asked the competitor Tuesday about the request because if money had changed hands, it could infringe on amateur regulations. TBS had asked the association if it could attach a microphone to Ishikawa's golf cart, but had its request refused.

TBS President Hiroshi Inoue apologized over the issue Wednesday, saying, "I'm very upset for causing Mr. Ishikawa great trouble." He added he was considering punishing staff members involved with the case. The broadcaster admitted the director of a production company in charge of the show made the request to the competitor. The director also contacted two other players in the same group as Ishikawa. The competitor said the director referred to a cash reward, but the director denied the allegation, according to TBS. The producer and other senior staff members were not informed of the director's actions. Meanwhile, TBS flew a helicopter over the golf course Ishikawa was playing Tuesday without the organizer's permission. "We lacked consideration. The production staff apparently focused too much on Mr. Ishikawa. I have verbally reprimanded them," Inoue said.

If you are talking about the Kanto Tourney that just ended, it was won by my mate's son, who just turned 18 and is another emerging star.

Yeah, no shit. That was really a stupid question. I'm sure the headline the next day read, "TIGER KNOWS RYO-KUN!!"
