Large size clothes shop in Tokyo

Postby Delinjapan » Fri May 18, 2007 8:38 pm

Where can one buy big size clothes in Tokyo? I already know about Zenmall but I would like some more choice (and maybe cheaper prices if that's possible). I'm 6'6 (194cm) and the largest size in most stores I go to is to just too tight and short (especially shorts with long sleeves). Any suggestions?

I get my business clothes tailored. It's not as expensive as it sounds and they fit perfectly.

Casual clothes I buy when I am outside Japan.

 .. Just kidding.

I used to go to a place in Shinjuku]Clubhouse Bar[/URL].. Can't remember the name of the place though..

Many moons ago, I remember seeing a place in Ikebukuro on the same side of the station as Sunshine Tower.. Never got the name of that one either.. I know; I'm a big help.

Travel out of the Japan with empty suitcases, return with them full..

Intersting.

I used to have buddy here that was 2 meters tall and about 120 kg. He was able to find stuff that fit him at Uniqlo. But that was 6 or 7 years ago. They may have changed.

Uniqlo is hit or miss; you sometimes end up with baggy shirts with midget arms.. I've found clothes at GAP before, but I'm not that huge.. Just gaijin proportioned. ;)

Good luck finding shoes over 30cm. If you look hard enough, you can find the 4 styles that exist in Tokyo.. I think there are more options for casual shoes; try Sports Authority.

yeah exactly, I was thinking about uniqlo when I was writing that. I can find shirts with short sleeves that don't fit too badly, but forget about the longer sleeve ones. The funny thing is that, if I'm not mistaken, they have a store in the States, so they must have bigger sizes...

where do you get your clothes tailored? would any store do it? the major problem I see here would be communication...you need to explain what you want instead of just choosing it.

The best place I've been to is Grand Back Big and Tall. In Tokyo I've seen stores in Aoyama and Yurakucho. Also know of one in Kobe.

The suits are decent. The prices aren't bad. I think it is much better than Zen Mall, where I feel like I am at a swap meet. Give it a shot.

I get most stuff done by these guys: http://www.dankan.co.jp/

Yes, you need to be able to communicate with them. If this is a problem then drag a Japanese friend along the first time. Dankan will keep your sizes on file so as long as you don't pork up too much (or slim down) repeat visits will be a lot easier.

I find their quality to be quite good overall. The price varies depending on the fabric you choose. I think shirts are about 5000 each for nice ones, and i usually pay about 10,000 for a pair of pants. Suits with two pants for 50,000 or so. You can go cheaper but of course the material isn't as nice. (Or a lot more expensive if so inclined!) I have found that the prices are pretty similar to buying off the rack here but that the quality is better and the fit is WAY better than anything off a rack.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Step One tailor

My brother, boyfriend and myself have all used this guy for work suits and even casual clothes. He is fantastic and speaks perfect English. He flys up from Thailand a few times a year with fabric samples, takes orders, measurements and then ships up the finished goods in a few weeks.

Best way I find to work with a tailor is to have something with you that you like or that fits you really well and get them to copy it and make custom adjustments. If it is not perfect, pin it up for alteration and send it back and he will fix it for you and send it right back (he pays the postage).

The fabrics he has are fantastic - lots of Italian wool suiting fabric, silks and cottons for shirts. I am really happy with the suits and coats he has made for me - a fab red flannel winter coat that fits perfectly. Plus it is HEAPS cheaper than buying off the rack. Probably less than half the price of a designer suit in the same quality fabric.

I have often wondered about guys who come in like this but never met anyone who has used them before.

I'm in need of some summer business clothes, I'll likely check him out. What sorts of prices GG?

I met him through some girlfriends a few years ago and had some things made. Then when I was in Bangkok a few years ago I visited his shop again and had some things made.

He is great - not pushy at all. I have met some indian tailors who have been quite pushy and quite expensive.

But just to give you an example of prices.. a flannel coat was around \12,000. Suits - really depends on the fabric you choose and how many pieces you get made - ie a second pair of trousers etc. My boyfriend had a summer suit (jacket and trousers) made last year and I think it was around \15,000 but I can't remember exactly.

Drop him a line and ask for a price list. He often has "specials" for his trips. eg suit, shirt, extra trousers but am not sure on the prices. For me it is less about the cost and more about the quality and fit. Prada or Amani suits would cost upward of \50,000 for me, but he is much cheaper than that.

yes thanks you very much!! I've been to Grand and Tall in Aoyama and it was perfect, found a few nice things on sale as well. Yeah, I will definetly go back.

FGLurker, Gomigirl, thanks for the Tailor recommendations. Right now I've found what I needed but I'll definitely check them out the next out I need new clothes.
