do the japanese peoples like f*cked gaijin or not?

Postby kotatsuneko » Sat Mar 29, 2003 11:01 am

hey i`ve only been here 5 months, and my experience is limited to various places around Hokkaido..

you lot have way more experience than me, so do the japanese peoples genuinely like or dislike foreigners?

many of the teachers i work with say my opinion that they do not is wrong, that they are curious, but are scared to communicate with us, thats why they stare but don`t speak..

but going into cafes, or trains, often the stares seem nothing like curiosity and more like intense dislike, perhaps not hatred, but extreme distaste..

in london, most of the japanese peoples i met behaved completely differently than they do here... they were so friendly and welcoming...thats why i`m so shocked and dissapointed at times by the people here..

so, your thoughts are most welcome!

I think this is one of the reason we call ourselves f*cked gaijin..whether they really like us or not, sometimes I don't feel happy and accepted here, there are other Asian countrires you will feel more welcoming even though they don't speak English that well.

You are never going to please all the people all the time and if you let it worry you, your head will explode. Just chill with friends that you have knowing that they like you and don't try to interpret every look that you get on the train.. you will drive yourself nuts for no reason...

When I catch people staring at me, I look in their eyes, just bow slightly and smile. Then I ignore them.

If I'm just sitting down, I just bob my head at them and then look away.

I ignore them then. I find that they stop staring after a while.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Yeah! That's what OLD SCHOOL does.
To quote from my dim memory of the book The Glorious Adventure by the great adventurer, raffish "Orientalist", and the original FG Richard Halliburton:
To be invisible Casbah one must first catch the eye of all first. Stare into their eyes before they see you and they will avert. You may then walk through the Casbah's chaos unseen by all.
