Hey, I kind of liked those.. Kind of ingenious, in a very stupid way. At least there weren't a lot of people around, and they didn't interrupt the flow of traffic.. I say 'big deal' to this 'cheating'..

In some way, you have to admire the gaijin cheating, Take-a-poop; Gaijin cheating is generally tatemae. Japaneses cheating is, was, and always will be honne. ;)

Can't say that I am not guilty of doing some of those tricks before.

On some of the subway gates, you can pull the handle bar part at the top and pop open the machine and the gates will flip open. I haven't had luck on JR yet though.

Jumping turnstiles in Japan is about as amusing and challenging as taking a lolly from a kid in a wheelchair.

I agree with Midwinter. This guy is different to the Aussie who liked licking things on trains as he is not harming anyone. Also he has a harmless sense of humor about him, whereas the Shaunne seemed to be purposely playing on the unconfrontational culture of Japan and making them feel uneasy.

He is also bringing to attention how stupid the turnstiles are in Japan - they only stop the honest. And if you havent bought a valid ticket, you arent honest. Pointless.

I knew some JETs whose policy it was never to buy full fare for their tickets. They bought the cheapest ticket to get in and pulled the 'Sorry I lost my ticket' routine. Their salaries were a lot higher than mine(I know, I'm pathetic) and it was embarassing once when I was with them and they did that.
You can only do it for so long before all the area JR staff remember you. I wouldn't be surprised if they called the police to make sure you you paid the fare.

Back in my day it was somewhat socially acceptable to "cheat" by purchasing one's commuter pass for the distance of basically one or two stations from one's destination. Then in the morning you'd buy the cheapest ticket from your home station and just throw it away and use your commuter pass when you got off the train.

I hear they got hip to this sort of thing though.

I did that all the time.

I was able to get back from my auto club that was an hour away, but didn't require any gate changes for 130 yen using my student pass.

You could often find the discarded tickets on the ground.

I did some "research" on this and found out that it only work's for part way but not round trip. Often times, you're better off buying the full round fare.

Thank you for sharing these highly informative video tutorials on how to cut unnecessary costs.

Seriously:
I don't think these guys are lame or anything, they probably bought tickets anyway and decided to film some goofy stuff as the place was empty. They aren't harming anyone and hey, don't we all do silly things when we're drunk.

I prefer those low gates over the ones that basically are like a impregnable wall (some cities have these), because if something goes wrong and the gates shut down you'd be stuck on one side. Could be dangerous.

Don't worry, proper tourniquets in confined spaces are made in such a way that if a fire alarm is triggered, power is lost or a guy at a desk pushes a certain button you can walk right through them. They need power to stay locked, not to unlock.

I'm not always the sharpest spoon in the drawer and it sometimes takes time to catch on to what things are in common practice. One or two stops from the end of the line where I live, I noticed that everybody in the whole area would get off there regardless of where the lived in the town. I was there to pick up a kid coming home from school and saw a mate who lived right next to the shuten (one stop further), get off at the station. I asked him what was up and where he was headed and when he said "home". Stupid then says to him "why get off here then, why not go to the shuten by your house?" He just laughed and said the ticket wickets were too difficult to use.

The station he and everybody else was getting off had no wickets, no JR attendents, it was just a stop. If you were to get on the train there you paid the trainman, or at the destination.

Since it is over a 1,000 yen for a trip downtown, they would cop the minimum 130 and ride all the way home, but get off before the stop with wickets. Occasionally, the JR guys will run a "spot" ticket check, but for the most part they commute (at least one way) for 130 a day.

Before Takeshortstroke says anything, they are all J-people!

okay, i didnt do this to cheat any fare, but i was waiting at hachiko for a friend who was late, and i REALLY needed to use the toilet.. all i did was follow real close behind someone with a big backpack and no problems. i used the toilet and got out the same way i got in.. although my friend knows an israeli girl that never paid a fair using this system and she got arrested and deported for doing this shit, so i wouldnt recommend it.
but, beyond an emergency in having to use the facilities, the transit systems are so efficient here (well, running 24 hours/day would be a nice improvement), i really dont see any validation in cheating them.. fuck if im gonna get behind the wheel of a car (sooner or later your gonna listen to ralph nader..)

Ive followed behind a friend so the gate would read us as one big fat person, like in gboothes pic, and it worked. Ive walked through and left the gate to beep behind me in busy stations. I think Ive tried to screw JR and any other train company as much as possible although these days its harder since I use suica.

I am still surprised by the number of Japanese adults and seniors that I spot using child fare tickets. No one else seems to notice or even care. I suppose they only consider it half cheating, which it kind of is actually.

There is a red light/buzzer that goes off in station attendants' booth when a child ticket is used. They can check fare cheaters that way. Easy to cheat during very busy times full of travelers, but when you are loaded and it's at a small station late at night...not so much :blush3:

There's also a chime.

I can hear it and I'm hearing it a lot recently when lone Japanese adults pass through the gates. By lone I mean that they aren't in a group but of course they've timed it so there's someone else passing through the gate at the same time to cover them. I've only noticed this particular variety of cheater at rather large train stations.

At stations like Toyoko Shibuya where there's around twenty or so gates in a row and no inspector's box at the end of the row, it seems like it's a pretty easy thing for them to get away with it as long as the station on the other end is also similarly set up.

She is clearly married to a Japanese guy, but having an affair with a foreigner. She was concerned that if she misplaced the kippu, her suspicious husband might find it later and well....you get the picture.
