Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Black Influence

Postby Tokyobk » Sun Jun 03, 2007 5:15 pm

Janet Jackson and her bronze look in particular and black culture (or the patronizing and romaniticized notion thereof) in general were obvious influences.

Was I the only one weally, weally annoyd by his speech impediment?

Am I going to hell for saying so?

People regularly take the piss out of "Wossy" but he generally gives as good as he gets. I don't particularly like him on some of his TV shows but he's actually very good on radio which might be surprising given his impediment. He is genuinely enthusiastic about Japan and his clout with the BBC gets him very good access. More of his clips over on this thread.

para para is just so lame. It is for people who can't dance and have no rythym so that is just why it is stepping from side to side... 1,2.. 1,2...

That would mean ALL Japanese people should be doing it as they have no "riddim". Is that what you're trying to say, GG? ;)

I personally think it was influenced by the dreadfully hated "Macarena" dance that was just as annoying... If I ever saw someone doing that in front of me, I'd quickly toss my Heineken bottle at them. An empty one of course! Beer is expensive these days. ;)

As far as I know the gal circles shun the whole hip-hop scene. For instance, gal circles have a rule that they'll never venture furter than the square in center st. because that leads to hip-hop territory. No kidding.

I can't help but like Jonathan Ross, he's a total character. I once saw him chase his daughter around a bandstand in Hyde Park wearing blue sneakers, baggy jeans with stars printed on them, a white shirt and a big fat cigar in his mouth, the day after he signed a 2 million pound deal with BBC. Classic!

Obvious from your perspective I guess. I don't think the girls themselves would claim that as an influence at all. Maybe Amuro-chan being from Okinawa started the whole "be tan" look that eventually morfed into ganguro and all the way to yamamba but I don't think the gals themselves think they are trying to look "black" as in African.

BTW, was that whole based on Adaamo-chan bit in the video a joke? Or are they serious about thinking the look was modelled after him?! I can't find any good pics of that character or I'd post one up.
