Bid for a Benz

TBS: Tokyo to Auction Off On-Line
The Tokyo government is ready to hold a second open auction, placing items seized in the process for the recovery of tax arrears....It was in August this year that the Tokyo government, in its first attempt as a local government, decided to use the Internet to auction off items it had seized from tax delinquents, including those who failed to pay property tax. Most of the items put up for auction were sold at prices far exceeding the starting bids...This time, a Mercedes-Benz is being auctioned off with a starting bidding price of 190 thousand yen. 51 other items, including works of art, are to be auctioned off, and bidders can begin applying starting tomorrow, and the bidding will start on the 9th of November.

For you folks who aren't here in Japan, 190,000 yen ($1,768.43 US dollars) is not unusual for a Benz more than five years old without a Shaken. It's not a huge bargan at all since the typical loan value would be less than 300,000 yen, wholesale price is 600,000, retail value could be 1,100,000 yen.

Now don't start damp dreaming about exporting cheap Benzs---the requirements, modifications and changes to export to North America could add $10,000 USD to that "bargan" price PLUS shipping.

Yeah, but wouldn't the Captain look sweet pulling up to interviews in that ride, Junko-chan doing the driving, I assume.

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Bloomberg: Japanese Armor, Olympic Medals on Block in Tax Agency Auction
Japan's National Tax Agency opened its first internet auction site, selling jewelry, kimonos and artwork collected from tax evaders. The auction site, operated by Yahoo! Japan Corp., opened at 1 p.m. today and will list the items until 1 p.m. on June 7, with winning bids announced by June 12. While Tokyo's tax office has held auctions in the past, this marks the first by the national agency. Among the offerings are a full suit of samurai armor standing 138 cm (4 feet, 6 inches) high, with a starting price of 25,000 yen ($205) and a commemorative medal from the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. A total of four auctions will be held this year. The second auction, to be held in September, will include cars, and the third will be restricted to property.
