Kippo: Local climate to benefit Japanese athletes
A senior competition official for the upcoming IAAF World Athletics Championships told the Kansai Press Club...that he is pinning high hopes on the performance of Japanese athletes for their improving capability coupled with local climate fitting them. The comment was made by Koji Sakurai, chairman of the Competition Committee..."Hotel accommodation and meals are of interest to athletes from other countries," he said. "They are expecting a great deal from the culinary environment of Osaka, where people are known to be willing to go bankrupt in pursuit of good food." As to the excruciating heat of Osaka in late August, he said, "Foreign athletes don't know how hot and humid it is in Osaka. The worse the conditions are, the more Japanese athletes will show their strength." Japan is likely to win medals in men's marathon, pole vault, hammer throw and others...Yoshimoto Kogyo, an entertainment company, and others have organized Osaka residents into cheering groups to enliven the event, he added.

Guess he's never been anywhere in the Southeastern USA, or even Southeast Asia. Only Japan has hot summers combined with high humidity - there's nowhere else like it...

Yeah, right. The athletes from Ethiopia and Kenya will probably have to throw on a sweater or two just to feel comfortable.

Guardian: Japanese flops a mystery, says team coach
World championship hosts Japan's track and field flops are a source of mystery to both the athletes and their coaches. After sprinter Shingo Suetsugu became the latest Japanese qualifying casualty in Tuesday's 200 metres, the team coach was left scratching his head. Japan risk becoming the first world championship host to finish without a medal since Canada failed to secure one in Edmonton in 2001. "I guess you would have to say it is a mystery," Susumu Takano told reporters. "There's something wrong. You have to think there's something wrong with their conditioning." Takano's extraordinary admission that Japan's athletes had failed to prepare correctly for Osaka's sweltering heat came on the back of a string of poor performances...more...

I am so tired of hearing sports commentators telling how certain weather elements are an advantage to certain teams and in this case, a country. They are all playing on the same equal playing field and thus the same fair and square conditions. People who blame the loss to the weather are just plain losers.

for me, that sentence could end perfectly right there. it may not be, but it sounds like the same damn guy who announces / commentates every fucking sporting event in the country. i just find him to be particularly obnoxious and i dread sporting events here just cause i know i'll be hearing more of him.

The commentators go crazy in this video:

Mainichi: Yamazaki fails to earn official 50 km walk time after being led into stadium too early
Japanese athlete Yuki Yamazaki failed to earn an official time in the men's 50km walk at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday after being led into the stadium and crossing the line before walking the full distance. Officials mistakenly led a staggering Yamazaki into the stadium, even though he still needed to walk another 2-kilometer lap in the grueling race. The 23-year-old athlete, who appeared delirious, followed the instructions and entered the stadium, but failed to receive an official time when he crossed the line because he was short of the mark...more...

Jeez - you've got to feel bad for the guy. But hilarious all the same.

If it was a discus thrower or even a long jumper or something, that official who wrongly led him off would do well to get the hell out of dodge, but it was a speed walker - what's he gonna do?
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

IHT:

"I feel very responsible for this," said Koji Sakurai, the competition chairman for the local organizing committee. Sakurai said the number of laps that Yamazaki had completed was miscommunicated to the staff members in charge of directing runners into the stadium...IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss, who was sitting next to Sakurai at a press conference, tried to cheer him up. "This has happened from time to time," Weiss said. "It's regrettable." Weiss smiled and added, "But please don't make hara-kiri tonight," a reference to a Japanese ritual suicide. Sakurai answered, "I do my best."

Hey Japan's got 1 medal! Yey - I love how the brands are doing their best trying to showcase the powerhouse Japanese track & field under these 'sweltering conditions'. US - 26 medals, JP - 1 medal.

I loved how the TV broadcasters were creaming their pants over the "new Japan and Asia record" for the 4 x 100 men's relay event. The Japanese runners came in a sad 5th place and not even a medal to bring home for that. Oh yeah, who cares about the US winning the Gold for both the men's and women's events? The announcers were more excited about the worthless new broken record.

2nd place is just a polite term for the first loser.

Japan won two medals and the first guy got absolutly no recognition. Soejima took the silver in the 1500 Wheelchair race on Saturday. I wonder if this is because Japanese tend to look down on handicapped folks.

He cannot do that. It is physically impossible to do, while locked in a rokujouma, with a gameboy in one hand, johnson in the other with Hustler spread out on the floor, all while monitoring the computer for new otaku sites!
