How do I order a round for the bar?

Postby winstonbike » Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:58 pm

We have been going to a small local bar where everyone has been great - and we have a corporate tab. What do I say to order a round for the bar and what do I say to offer to buy someone a drink? thanks

Loudly, so all can hear:

Ikite yuku shikaku mo nai!
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Nah, just kidding. But it depends on what kind of place you are going to. Usually the bill will be brought out at the end of the night or you pay at the register on the way out. So, just paying for one round is kind of awkward.

If you want to make some kind of gesture, and don't mind paying for everything, just let them know that it's on you tonight; "Gochisoushimasu"

Alternatively, if you just want to let them know you appreciate them/their help, whatever, just tell them - it will mean a lot more to them than just picking up the tab.

If it's a whisky bar you can probably order an entire bottle of bourbon or Scotch and then just top off your buddies' glasses as they'll probably drink it with water or on ice. If it's a beer bar that serves bottles, in my opinion you shouldn't worry so much about paying for a round, just occasionally walk around and top off people's glasses, it's a friendly old-school gesture people like. I think buying a round for everyone might seem a little overly grandiose or too direct in Japan. Unless you wait until you and everyone else is shit faced. Then everything's cool no matter what.

You yell out,
"kono roundo wa watashi no ogori desu!"
"This round is on me!"

To buy someone a drink (a girl?)
"watashi ga ogotte agemasu."
"I`ll treat."
If it feels good, it is good.
