Which are worse- desparate organized foreign gangs or vicious native organized crime groups?

Anyway, the film is "Yamaguchi-gumi sandaime," with Takakura Ken, right?

The "Jingi naki tatakai" series also take place in this time period and is available in boxset DVD as "The Yakuza Papers."

For books I recommend Robert Whiting's "Tokyo Underworld" on the role of the American occupiers and the black markets. To get an inside perspective on pre-war to more recent organized crime (really gambling) "Confessions of a Yakuza" and you can read a bizarre book about a meeting between a Western woman and Yamaguichi-gumi 3rd leader Taoka called "The Tattooed Men."

so was "dances with wolves". a movie making euro-caucasians (kevin costner... GASP) appear to be compassionate and sympathetic to the millions of native people killed (GASP).
the day people start learning history lessons from movies is the day that bullshit starts earning academy awards..
oh.
wait.
