[/floatr]The Chunichi Shimbun (Japanese) is excited by the story of New Zealand eikaiwa teacher David Shackley. "David-san" took part in Godo Fire Matsuri in May of this year and organizers believe that he is the first foreigner to take part in the festival in its 1200 year history. The paper says that Japan's declining birthrate has led to a shortage of mikoshi carriers and so his participation was much appreciated. David moved to the area with his wife, Hitomi, and two children and was approached to take part. He agreed, considering it an honour and thinking it would be a good way to get involved with local people.
