Declining Birthrate Increases Foreign Mikoshi Carriers

[floatr][/floatr]The Chunichi Shimbun (Japanese) is excited by the story of New Zealand eikaiwa teacher David Shackley. "David-san" took part in Godo Fire Matsuri in May of this year and organizers believe that he is the first foreigner to take part in the festival in its 1200 year history. The paper says that Japan's declining birthrate has led to a shortage of mikoshi carriers and so his participation was much appreciated. David moved to the area with his wife, Hitomi, and two children and was approached to take part. He agreed, considering it an honour and thinking it would be a good way to get involved with local people.

I find it amusing too.. as a heap of my friends as well as my boyfriend and myself have carried the mikoshi in our neighbourhood. The main reason we did it was for the free drinks and free food at all the rest stops!!! Plus it was a time when all the neighbours were our best buddies.

After the festival most went back to ignoring us as usual but at least when people do see us they don't look at us like they think we are out to steal their wallets anymore. (we live in a quiet suburban area just a little bit west of Shinjuku)

Because when gaijins are in attendance, they always ask gaijins to carry the omikoshi from the front where they can be seen by everyone. I guess it gives them a secure feeling that they are really kokusaiteki!

Exactly the same response I got in my neighborhood (also a quiet suburban area just a little bit west of Shinjuku). That day, I was "the most wonderful 'gaijin' that ever lived in the neighborhood". The next day, after the alcohol wore off it was a sullen "oh....hi" at the supermarket.
Damn, does everyone live in a quiet suburban area just a little bit west of Shinjuku? If so, see you all Wednesdays at Olympic, when two skinny carrots are on sale for 100 yen.

Nah - we are between Nishi-Shinjuku 5-chome and Nakano-Shimbashi stations. So I guess it is more Nakano-ku but when walking home from the station we walk through Shinjuku-ku, Shibuya-ku and Nakano-ku within a space of 5 minutes.

The Nakanosakaue Olympic has food...overly priced food...very overpriced food. Kind of reminds me of Gelson's in LA, except the sakana song doesn't get much airtime at Gelsons. The second floor of Olympic has all the other overpriced things needed to clean up after I make a glorious mess in the kitchen. On the first of the month, they seem to put a lot of stuff on sale, so I can get gallons of Kabi-Killer....makes a great daquiri. There are also two Hanamasa, a 10-minute walk on either side of Nakanosakaue station on Ome-Kaido.
On a mindless walk with the gf a few weeks ago, we did find an Olympic deep in Suginami-ku, on Ome-kaido, that didn't seem to have any food.
Summit used to have this killer Okinawa Kuro-pan, but the one in Higashi-Nakano and a few others I ventured into seemed to have stopped carrying it (my fat thanks them for this).

And lastly, since we're exchanging our personal histories, I attended Crossroads School in Santa Monica, CA, but I didn't study very much.
