No pay = working visa?

Postby akatsuka » Mon Jun 11, 2007 9:48 pm

Hi, I currently looking for a trained internship in Japan and I was wondering about the following question. If anybody knows the answer, please help!

basically, my sponsor for the internship in Japan will most likely be by a Bilingual Design company that will not pay me for the time I work there. (It seems the norm.) As I'm not getting paid here, and probably wont be anywhere else (probably wont have time for a part time job) do I still need someone to sponsor a working visa for me? Can I work unpaid on a tourist visa? (Dont tell me dodgy stuff as I dont think the company who sponsors me will appreciate it!)

As I wont be getting paid, I dont see the problem, but of course it might course difficulties in finding a place to stay, etc?

(I have asked the British Council the same question, but they just refer me to the visa information page of the British embassy in japan. This isnt much use to me as it doesnt answer my question.)

You won't be able to get a regular working visa because the government sets minimum salary amounts that the sponsoring company must pay you. (the amounts differ based on type of visa, but the minimum used to be something like 250,000 yen/month for an english teacher, for example).

However, it sounds like you are British, in which case you can get a "working holiday" visa without a sponsor anyway. This will be a longer term visa than the standard 90-day tourist visa.

There is an interns visa.. (technical interns - type S)

Rather than ask us about something odd, either speak to the consulate (the japanese one) and also check on-line as the MOFA has really lifted their game website wise of the last few years.
