My ward tax has gone up

Postby rooboy » Fri May 25, 2007 4:41 pm

Since when was it decided to raise ward taxes?

I'm on the same income I have been since coming to Japan - pretty much the average for an eikaiwa teacher - but my ward tax has jumped up in comparison to last year's.

Can anybody post a link about this? I usually keep up with J news on just about everything but I didnt know I was gonna be paying more ward tax on the same income for this financial year.

Thanx for any news links.

It could be the weird system used.
Local taxes are calculated according to the income earned in the previous calender depending on where you lived on Jan. 1.
If you moved into your current place after Jan. 1 two years ago, you would not have been taxed by your current municipality last year (but would be by the place you lived in before, or not at all if you'd arrived in-country without previous residence).
If you have moved during that time and had been in-country for years, the increased taxation could be simply that the new (current) municipality charges higher tax rates than the old one.
If none of the above applies, even local governments are The Man and can change taxation levels virtually at will.
I suggest you check out your municipal government's website for clarification. Or, better still, actually go and see them. My experience with local governments here has been outstanding and if the increase is too much of a burden, they will gladly discuss ways to make it easier to pay.

This is happening because of a change in the tax system. Basically they have decentralized some of the national tax out to the wards. The good news is, the extra tax you pay for your ward tax, you are no longer paying for the national tax... so all in all, you are paying about the same amount of tax anyway.

I was really surprised when i was my tax bill this week, until I found that both Prefectural (4% of income) and Municipal (6% of income) have been rolled up into one. Apparently, It's the same for all wards/prefectures now.. Savages.

And as Marvin said, "Local taxes are calculated according to the income earned in the previous calender depending on where you lived on Jan. 1." So if you took a pay cut (like I did this year), your double fucked. Lovely..

Got my ward tax today... fucking bullshit. It doubled. I have decided to go home after two years. My salary here has flatlined. Taxes are going up, shakken was out fucking rageous. The cost of petrol, food and all that shit is 10 times what I would pay in America... Adi fucking OS Japan.

Instead of raising taxes why don't the cunts fucking try limiting spending? They are building a new freeway bypass through our town and the fucking thing goes off to nowhere... they've done renovations throughout the city and then taxes double...

I am sick of it. I hope these old fucks rot in tax hell. Let's see how well they get by when there are no more young people to pay for their health care, sand lots and sake. Fuck em' all.

Yeah, I got my ward tax in the mail today too. I can't say I'm too happy about it. But I hated paying taxes in the States just as much.

I don't know which state you lived in but I never ever paid a CITY local tax... ever. I lived in Tennessee, no state individual income tax. There was however a sales tax. Luckily I lived within driving distance to Kentucky.. no sales tax. So I would buy all my daily needs in Kentucky and not pay a dime in sales tax to Tennessee.

I did however pay Federal taxes but they were low with all the deductions you can make... it was ridiculous. 90% of the time I got a small refund for overpaying.

I am leaving this shit hole. I can go back, not pay local tax, not pay sales tax and be confident knowing that Japan is a dying Tax shithole. I forsee taxes here going up to near 40-50% by the time I am retirement age. Fuck that.

My local ward tax was 19%. From 10%... they can lick my asshole. Two more years... two more mofucking years.

Mine went up about 80% but from what I have heard it is supposed too be revenue neutral. Your income taxes should be proportionally going down. At least that is what some accountants have told me.

Basically what they are trying to do is prevent cities from going bankrupt by allowing them to increase ward taxes while decreasing the national income tax rate.

Interestingly, I think most people realize why the national government was in such a mad rush to have their nation-wide municipal elections in April, because if the voting public got a hold of this 90% of the LDP municipal politicians would be out on their ear.

Good info there. Almost every foreign friend I know has gone off the deep end about this shit. It would have been really nice had they incrementally increased the local taxes... whilst incrementally decreasing the national income tax.... But I got slammed with a 19% increase over 10% from last year... and my income increased by like 1%... something is truly fucked up with their addition or subtraction.

I've lived all over the place and it really depends in the US. In NYC you have city tax on top of NY state tax. Plus the sales tax is pretty high too. Washington State has no state income tax but all other taxes (property, etc) are so fucking high that if you own anything it ends up being one of the highest tax states around.

I didn't have an income in Japan in 05 so I didn't pay ward tax last year so I'm not really sure how much mine went up.

If you go back you'll have lower taxes. The downside is you'll have to live in TN. I don't think I could handle being in the South again. I left it when I was 14 for a reason. I do like Southern women and Southern food though.

Haven't you heard about the new "Furusato" hometown tax, hee, hee? Many Japanese spouses are gonna get nailed by both "hometown" and ward tax I bet. :bukkake: [INDENT]

http://blog.mag2.com/m/log/0000085642/108587566.html?c=stu
Fukuoka gov. Wataru Aso, a head of the National Governor's Association
announced at a news conference on the 22th that the idea for so called
"Furusato (Hometown) tax payment" is worth the study,
however he also expressed some cautions saying "the effect is still
unclear."
The idea of this tax payment is to narrow the economic gap among local
governments as it enables residents who are from local areas
but are now living in a major city like Tokyo
to pay a certain amount of tax to their hometown.
This hometown tax, currently under discussion, was proposed
by Mr. Kan, Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and
Telecommunications, in an attempt to recognize the fact that
many big city residents are from local areas.
The proposal is based on an idea that
inhabitant taxes paid by people from local areas should have
some chance to flow back into the local government where they grew up.

I'm in Kanagawa and my taxes this year are on par with Tokyo ones. I nearly fell over when I opened my little envelope!

I guess now is the time to find out just what your local area is doing with the money - and what services they offer - especially in regards to foreign residents. Does the local library offer books in different languages? Do they provide enough information in different languages for their residents? Do we have access to how this money is being used?
