Bloody hell, that would never happen, but then again I haven't checked my girl friends house yet. That could be a problem. I may have to go to Central America with you!

Via Google Sightseeing: Here's a cool photo of an airplane (Boeing 737?) and it's shadow landing at Haneda Airport I certainly didn't see the first time I went to Google Earth.

If this is a re-post of already posted info, my apologies.

GoogleEarth is very cool indeed. From a ground level perspective Kobe never looked like that for me - the mountains seem much higher when you're walking around beneath them. But it's interesting to see another perspective.

Maxim magazine celebrated its 100th issue by building a 75-by-110-foot billboard featuring its cover image of Eva Longoria, billed as "TV's Sexiest Earthling." The billboard doesn't tower over a highway, however. It's flat on the ground so that it can be seen from a satellite.

If you go looking at the crazy google earth pics, there is a flying car in Perth, Western Australia that was pictured. It must be off the ground a fair way as the shadow is a distance off..

I just ran across a rather interesting site based on Google Maps, WeatherBonk. It overlays GoogleMaps with local weather station reports and webcams. It also has a nice weather radar overlay but that only works in the US, sorry, no coverage for the zainichi FGs.

I just noticed they added 'Street View' to Google Maps:

- Do a search in Google. For example 'fucked gaijin'
- Choose Maps for 'fucked gaijin'
- Click on 'Street View' and little camera icons appear
- Click on a camera icon, and you can choose what street to view in that city..

Cool, but I'm not sure I want anyone on the Internet knowing what my front door looks like.. Hhhhmm

Supposedly, they got guys in unmarked black vans going around snapping pictures. Fortunately or unfortunately, Japan has not caught up with this, yet.

Yeah, it's only available now for a few cities in the US..

I'm not sure if I like this technology; where any Take-a-poop on the Net has access to people's front doors. Seems like a few good lawyers could get rich suing Google for 'aiding and abedding' a stalking murder..

Technically, anyone can snap pictures of public streets and houses. It's when google or anyone starts entering people's homes and evade privacy.. :shakeh:

It is interesting technology though. How did they do it? Send out an army of photographers with spherical cameras and then join them all up?

I guess people aren't paranoid about shit like this anymore. My dad, and many of his friends, would've been shooting their hippie-ass shotguns at any black cars driving around with cameras sticking out of the roof.

"Hey! What the fuck you think you're doin' in front of my home?"
"Who? Me? Oh, we're just taking pictures of your street so we can post them on the Internet."
"Oh no you're not.."

Actually some people are raising a fuss about the privacy concerns raised by Google Street View. Here's an interesting article about it.
Kalin-Casey expressed her privacy concerns to the site BoingBoing, and she was joined by a gaggle of commenters who felt that Google had crossed a line by photographing people's homes, cars, and garbage cans. The race was on to find the most alarming and actionable image. Promising candidates included the two men entering a cannabis club in San Francisco, the interior shot of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel (a no-no since 9/11), and the guy standing outside a strip joint.

Not the real kind.. Marijuana patches need protecting.. and there are a lot of hungry animals in the woods.

Actually, my dad hated guns but had one for awhile]with guns where I grew up.

Street View now also available for parts of Japan. It looks like my old place in Tokyo is (was?) up for sale. I tried finding a bar called Araku in Golden Gai but the Google mappers didn't seem to go down the right side streets.

Wow. It's strange seeing your own front door, bicycle, car, and so forth on somebody else's web page. They even got a very clean picture of my wife's umbrella (left outside to dry), which was subsequently stolen when she went shopping. "Natsukashii", says Mrs. Omae Mona. Maybe I can use this photo for an insurance claim or something.

It wasn't long before I started to cruise the love hotel districts and well-known streetwalker hang-outs to see if I could spot anyone caught in the act. There are a few pictures available but Street View seems a little chaste and didn't offer me the chance to look down certain streets no matter from which direction I tried to approach them.

Anybody know where the law/right to privacy falls with this sort of thing? I know if you catch somebody on a public street, they have no expectation of privacy, but what about open windows and that sort of thing?

If you'd caught somebody walking down your street snapping pics through open windows, that would probably get people up in arms, but since the mapping cars are here and gone so quickly, they don't get noticed much.

If a person's photo is up on Street View and they want it taken down, do they have any recourse?

(No, I'm not in any pics that I've seen so far, but a friend's neighbor is, caught with a "what the hell is that?" expression on his face as the mapping car passed him by.)
