YD is full of dickheads.

Nevertheless, the wingman thing is funny for me because I've been using that terminology for a long time. When guys travel in pairs, one of them has to be the wingman. His job is to strategically take down the inevitable ugly chick that hangs out with the cute chick at a bar/club. Since the cute chick is being targetted by the wingman's friend, the wingman makes a sacrifice for the good of the team. Incidentally, the ugly chick is known as the "blocker" (as in the blocker in American football) who runs interference for the cute chick. The blocker on occasion is also cute, but her job is the same: to provide a convenient excuse for her friend to get out of there just as you are making the moves on her.

Does anybody have other terms for this phenomenon?

I sure as hell wouldn't do it. Christ, anyone who VOLUNTEERS to be a wingman is either: a) married, b) geigh, c) so lacking in self-esteem they have no hope, d) attends "What's your hobby?" parties on a regular basis.
