New McStarbucks In Japan

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Aug 29, 2007 3:34 pm

McDonald's Japan have opened a new style of McCafe in locations around Japan with a focus on coffee and pastries. The branch in Ebisu Garden Place was packed on the opening day. The McCafes have proved successful in other locations in the world but this is the first time that the company has gone for a major punch in Japan to counter the growing competition from coffee chains like Starbucks.

But the big question is:

Can you still get coffee for 1oo yen? And free refills with that?

I don't know what this says about the new stores but at 3:10pm today, I spotted two McCafe employees on a break. They were ordering coffee, hot dogs and bagels - from the Shin Bamba branch of Doutor. The McCafe Japan site confirms that a branch just opened down the road. If they keep doing that, it won't be long before someone snaps a picture and posts it on the net.

Well, that didn't work. ZakZak reports that McDonalds will close around a third of their new McCafes. (5 out of 15).

I wonder why they didn't just incorporate the McCafe concept into the existing chain. Believe it or not, their iced coffee that they now sell in the states is pretty damn good, and I love the ability to drive through and pick one up on the way home for such a cheap price.

The inscrutable Mrs. Bucky told me that she recently tried McDonald's new high brow coffee offering here in the US of A. The medium size was the same as a large at Starbucks so quantity was not an issue, but, she claimed, the quality was the same as a $1.09 latte at Costco. Starbucks, she announced, brews a far superior product.:coffee:
