Dog clothes are very common in Tokyo---perhaps 20-30% of the dogs as forced to wear clothes here---in my more-money-than-brains neighborhood, Denenchofu, maybe 80%.

The vet agreed that Labs have especially oily fur to make them "waterproof," but he explained that Japanese houses with tatami and shoddy flooring are ill suited to wet dogs (especially during the rainy season now).

Traditionally, Japanese dogs are only kept outside (tortured on a 30cm chain), so in modern apartments and condos where dog must come inside, Japanese people prefer to keep their dogs dry (and "osharei" fashionable ).

Japan Times: Abe's car is rear-ended in Osaka

A car carrying Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was hit in the rear by a police escort car just before noon Saturday while he was on the stump in Osaka Prefecture for the July 29 House of Councilors election, police said. There were no injuries in the 11:40 a.m. accident in Sakai. A police car bumped Abe's vehicle, slightly damaging it, after the police car was rear-ended by another car carrying Abe's aides.

My guess is that a number of LDP supporters would have hoped it was more serious, so they might be able to cash in on the 'Obuchi Efect'

If the photo was taken right after the accident occurred, it would appear the cops were running the red light.

It's not clear how soon after the accident this picture was taken. On the one hand, the police are still in their car which suggests that it has only just taken place. Then again, the people crossing the road are barely paying attention and there's no sign of what the car could have hit.

Maybe it's just the weird perspective of the shot, but it looks like the three pedestrians in the center of the pic are practically walking on top of each other. The guy in the middle walking to the viewer's right is really threading the needle there. And they are hugging close within the lines of the crosswalk, a very Japanese thing to do.
