3 in Kanto, another quake that was a 3 near Aomori and a couple of minutes after that a 4 in Hokkaido.

All of Japan is shaking.

Japan is sinking?

Postby dimwit » Tue Jul 17, 2007 8:05 am

That 11:38 quake is a weirdy. Given my background, I should know what is going on or at least what plausible explanation. I don't. I assume that given the epicentre (in the Japan Sea off of Kyoto), the quake occured on a connected fault, so why was the effect felt in distant area such as Chiba and Hokkaido but not noticed in Kyoto, Tottori and western Japan? My first thought was that they made a mistake in locating the epicentre but the scan of the USGS pinpointed it to the same location.

About 100 drums containing low-level nuclear waste at Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant were knocked over by Monday's earthquake and some lost their lids, Kyodo news agency said on Tuesday.

The fallout continues:
The operator of an earthquake-ravaged nuclear plant said Wednesday a radioactive leak from the plant was 50 percent bigger than first reported two days ago. The mayor ordered the facility closed until its safety could be confirmed.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. also said about 400 barrels containing low-level radioactive waste at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant were knocked over, and the lids had come off 40 of them, as a result of Monday's deadly 6.8-magnitude quake. The announcement revised the company's earlier estimate of 100 tipped barrels.

"We made a mistake in calculating the amount that leaked into the ocean. We apologize and make correction," Tokyo Electric said in a statement. Spokesman Jun Oshima said the amount of radioactive water that leaked into the Sea of Japan was still "one-billionth of Japan's legal limit."

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel and without proper regard for safety.
The resulting steam explosion and fire released at least five percent of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind.
28 people died within four months from radiation or thermal burns, 19 have subsequently died, and there have been around nine deaths from thyroid cancer apparently due to the accident: total 56 fatalities as of 2004.
An authoritative UN report in 2000 concluded that there is no scientific evidence of any significant radiation-related health effects to most people exposed. This was confirmed in a very thorough 2005-06 study.

Toyota and Mitsubishi Motors halt production in Japan after earthquake

TOKYO (AP) _ Japanese automakers, including No. 1 Toyota Motor Corp., called production halts Wednesday at factories in Japan because of quake damage at a major parts supplier.
The temporary closure of auto parts maker Riken Corp.'s plant at Kashiwazaki city, near the epicenter of Monday's magnitude-6.8 quake, has forced Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Fuji Heavy Industries to scale back production.
Toyota, Japan's top automaker, will stop production lines at a dozen factories centred in central Aichi prefecture Thursday afternoon and all day Friday, said Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco.
Also stopping production at Honda due to JIT orders.

Catania cancel Japan tour

AFP
July 24, 2007
TOKYO (AFP) - Italian Serie A club Catania on Tuesday cancelled their tour of Japan, blaming a powerful earthquake that caused a small nuclear radiation leak.

Concerns over the nuclear issue "were felt strongly at various levels of the club,"

That's plagarized from a nuclear industry webpage.

The actual report is here- I haven't read independent criticism of it. Basic story- thyroid cancer up significantly especially in children, other cancers to be seen in the future, but overall health effects limited.
http://www.unscear.org/unscear/en/chernobyl.html

[quote]Health effects
The Chernobyl accident caused many severe radiation effects almost immediately. Of 600 workers present on the site during the early morning of 26 April 1986, 134 received high doses (0.7-13.4 Gy) and suffered from radiation sickness. Of these, 28 died in the first three months and another 19 died in 1987-2004 of various causes not necessarily associated with radiation exposure. In addition, according to the UNSCEAR 2000 Report, during 1986 and 1987 about 450,000 recovery operation workers received doses of between 0.01 Gy and 1 Gy. That cohort is at potential risk of late consequences such as cancer and other diseases and their health will be followed closely.

The Chernobyl accident also resulted in widespread radioactive contamination in areas of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine inhabited by several million people. In addition to causing radiation exposure, the accident caused long-term changes in the lives of the people living in the contaminated districts, since the measures intended to limit radiation doses included resettlement, changes in food supplies and restrictions on the activities of individuals and families. Later on, those changes were accompanied by the major economic, social, and political changes that took place when the former Soviet Union broke up.

For the last two decades, attention has been focused on investigating the association between exposure caused by radionuclides released in the Chernobyl accident and late effects, in particular thyroid cancer in children. Doses to the thyroid received in the first few months after the accident were particularly high in those who were children and adolescents at the time in Belarus, Ukraine and the most affected Russian regions and drank milk with high levels of radioactive iodine. By 2002, more than 4,000 thyroid cancer cases had been diagnosed in this group, and it is most likely that a large fraction of these thyroid cancers is attributable to radioiodine intake. It is expected that the increase in thyroid cancer incidence due to the Chernobyl accident will continue for many more years, although the long-term level of risk is difficult to quantify precisely.

Among Russian recovery operation workers with higher doses there is emerging evidence of some increase in the incidence of leukaemia. However, based on other studies, the risk of radiation-induced leukaemia would be expected to fall within a few decades after exposure.

Apart from the dramatic increase in thyroid cancer incidence among those exposed at a young age, and some indication of an increased leukaemia incidence among the workers, there is no clearly demonstrated increase in the incidence of solid cancers or leukaemia due to radiation in the most affected populations. Neither is there any proof of other non-malignant disorders that are related to ionizing radiation. However, there were widespread psychological reactions to the accident, which were due to fear of the radiation, not to the actual radiation doses.

There is a tendency to attribute increases in the rates of all cancers over time to the Chernobyl accident, but it should be noted that increases were also observed before the accident in the affected areas. Moreover, a general increase in mortality has been reported in recent years in most areas of the former Soviet Union, and this must be taken into account when interpreting the results of Chernobyl-related studies.

The present understanding of the late effects of protracted exposure to ionizing radiation is limited, since the dose-response assessments rely heavily on studies of exposure to high doses and animal experiments]

We drove through the Niigata area yesterday where the last big earthquake was centred. Lots of houses still have blue tarps on their roofs and the road was bouncy with all the repairs - mainly around the bridges etc.

Seems to have hit the area much harder than I first had realised.
